"My interest in sustainability started before my formal college education and I continue to develop my knowledge in this focus area, which should, in my opinion, be part of every project and facet of life. Scientists have begun to realize that in order to survive as a species, humans need to be aware of, and truly live with, their environment. We must understand that the world is a giant closed ec

osystem, and that damage to one part of the Earth can have an impact on other parts of the Earth. Sustainability is important from the neighborhood to the international level, and every citizen on Earth can contribute to the global effort to live more sustainable, healthy lives."

Some of my favorite folks that contributed to my learning and becoming an Architect. First and foremost my Mom and Dad who developed my artistic interests, giving continual encouragement in all that I did through my life, and my Grandma and Grandpa Crane who got me interested in sustainability with scores of books in their library and their love for nature, growing up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Feather River Canyon in California, American Samoa and the Rockies of Colorado.

Special thanks to my wife for the beautiful lover of nature and humanitarian that she is. Delilah inspires me daily and keeps me involved in cool projects, like designing replacement homes from recent fires at Silver Lake and Medical Lake. The communities are so wonderful out there! We look forward to helping the native Hawaiians in Lahaina, Maui next and have some special contacts teaming up with us in our efforts. She and my step-daughter, Neffie, have also given me appreciation for a beautiful, historic type of dance that I now consider the most graceful performing art and one that creates sisterhood and encourages femininity.

And to those memorable ones, to highlight a few, that were part of my schooling:
Mr. Wendle and Mr. Parks from Newport HS. Henry Matthews and Ken Carper from WSU. Inspirational teachers and professors! Thank you so much for passing on your knowledge in such creative ways! 😎👍. A special thanks to Melinda Crane and my kids who supported my long hours of studio at CU Boulder and WSU and as an intern in my early career.

And to my church brothers and sisters and Boy Scout leaders who rounded out my life.

What a great group of people who have surrounded me and given me drive through my 35 years in the profession.

I have so many experiences ahead to share with my amazing wife, family and friends. Kudos to you all.

Can we go back to creating beautiful ART?
Is it expensive? Not if it lasts for centuries.

Our Story

Chuck Crane, Principal Architect, “Mr Green”

Delilah Crane, CEO, “The Green Queen”

“My interest in living green has always been a part of me. When I was a child, I loved spending time in nature more than I cared for hanging around other kids. If I had to be inside, I always wanted the windows open so the sunshine, breeze, and bird songs could fill the house. When I grew up, I did everything I could to bring the outdoors in. I filled my home with plants, filled my yard with flowers and bird feeders to attract birds, bees, and butterflies, and of course, continued to keep the windows and doors open as much as possible to blur the line between out and in. My passion and education grew exponentially as I learned about plants, herbs, health and healing. I learned how truly vital being in nature is to being healthy. After meeting Chuck, our passions and knowledge combined to create a truly green business.

It is our goal to make every project, not just ‘low impact’ on the environment, but actually a Positive Impact! Meaning that when we enter a piece of land and build a structure on it, we Improve the land around the structure. We Increase the abundance and diversity of wildlife, and we therefore increase the health and happiness of the people who will use, live, and work within the structure. We need to heal the industry that has the worst reputation for pollution, use of resources, waste, and scraping the land. We at Back to Terra don’t do things that way! We work With the land, even repair and restore it by adding trees, swales, ground covers, etc. We use local materials, and sustainably harvested timber, and recycled or repurposed wood and materials. We use alternative building materials, such as straw bales, hempcrete, bamboo. And we love skylights, fiber optic solar lights, geothermal heat, gray water systems (systems that use the same water several times). And of course we Love renewable energy such as efficient and safe vertical wind turbines, and new highly efficient solar systems that can charge even in cloud cover and bright moonlight! This business is our passion! NetZero* or even NetZero+* is always our goal! Humans can be a blessing to nature! We need to learn to live WITH the earth, Not ON it!
