Here's something every Marin oak owner should know how to spot!

See this on your tree? That's the sign of . It targets stressed white oaks, especially valley oaks, blue oaks, and Oregon white oaks, and it can sit quietly in the upper canopy for years before it ever moves down the trunk. Once it takes hold, an infestation typically takes three to seven years to kill the tree, and by the time you see wilting or reddish leaves in the canopy, the beetle has already been at work for a while.

If you've got a mature valley oak, blue oak, or Oregon white oak on your property, take a minute to check the trunk and larger branches for small round holes, sap oozing, or fine boring dust. It's a quick look that can catch a big problem early.

Not necessarily! Bay laurels are valuable native trees that provide wildlife habitat and support local ecosystems. But here's the catch: California bay laurel is one of the primary hosts spreading sudden oak death to nearby oaks — often staying healthy itself while continuing to produce spores that put your oaks at risk.

The good news: it's not all-or-nothing. Selectively pruning or removing bay laurels growing close to high-value oaks may help reduce the risk of sudden oak death.

By now most of us in Marin have heard of ; it's been a persistent problem here and across the greater Bay Area for years, especially for tanoaks and coast live oaks. But knowing the name is different from knowing what to actually look for on your own tree. A few signs worth keeping an eye out for:

- Bleeding cankers — dark, oozing patches on the trunk
- Dieback up in the crown
- Leaves turning brown suddenly, while still attached to the tree
