TWDB’s Water Weekly: The latest drought map for conditions as of June 2 shows drought contraction of seven or more percentage points for the second consecutive week. This week’s drought contraction was driven by improvements in South and West Texas and has reduced the total drought area in the state to its smallest extent in 2026. https://bit.ly/TexasWaterWeekly

TWDB’s Water Weekly: The latest map for conditions as of March 31 shows a second consecutive week of drought expansion pushing drought to its largest extent in Texas since August 2022. Extreme and exceptional drought is impacting almost 30 percent of the state, the most since April 2025. https://bit.ly/TexasWaterWeekly

💧 More than 50% of Americans rely on groundwater for drinking water, and nearly all rural Texans depend on it.

Groundwater is stored in underground formations called aquifers and replenished by rainwater that soaks into the soil. Forests, prairies, wetlands and even well-maintained lawns help recharge these critical water supplies.

When we replace natural ground with concrete and asphalt, less water can soak in, and more is lost to runoff and evaporation.

March 8-14 is National Groundwater Awareness Week. What happens on the surface affects the water beneath our feet.
