New art gallery to open in downtown SLO β€” and it’s connected to Junkgirls

Here's a sneak-peek of the new Jenny K Art & Design Gallery opening tomorrow, Oct. 22 (soft opening) with the grand opening on Friday, Nov 6 for Art After Dark. I've wanted and needed a dedicated Gallery space for my larger works, lighting and furniture for a long time and when Therese with the SLO Collection offered this beautiful space to me as a pop-up for the Holidays through January, I jumped at the chance! It's perfect: beautiful brick with wood floors, just the right size, great windows & light. I love that it's 5 doors down from our store and now with my studio in the back room at the store - it all came together perfectly. It is located at 844 Monterey Street in SLO, next to Brandy Meliville and to start, the Gallery will be open Thursday - Sunday from 11-6 as well as by appointment. And never fear! "The lead singer is not leaving the band!" I am still very much a part of our retail store and the JunkGirls brand - this opportunity gives me the space & room to share what i especially love to do. It's been a huge push over the last 8 weeks with closing my warehouse, moving my studio into the back of the store and opening this new space and I can't thank Melissa, Daniel, Ellen, Heather, Patti, Milla, Eden & Stephanie enough for their help & support and Tyler for his can-do attitude, availability and muscle in making all this happen. Therese, thank you again for believing in us and giving me this opportunity! I look forward to filling this space with lots of new works and to what's to come. πŸ™πŸ»β€οΈ

I wanted to share one of the new pieces I just finished for my new Gallery. It's a mirror framed in antique and vintage wood letterpress type. I know many of you have seen me make tables and art with my letterpress, but it's been a while since I made a mirror and I made sure it was a big one, measuring 40" square. Melissa took some photos and videos of my process and I thought you'd enjoy seeing them. Wood letterpress is made from hardwoods such as Maple and starts out blonde and soaks up the ink as it is used to print over and over. You see a lot of black but not color as often. This type is so colorful because it was used to print rodeo, circus and carnival posters and billboards in the 1920'-1960's. The pieces I have are from incomplete and extra sets and I've even included some hand-carved pieces such as the "U" I am pointing out in the video. A shout out to Howard Products for my favorite product, Feed N Wax and to Titebond for Quick & Thick, the best glue I've used to make these πŸ™ŒπŸ» I have been head-down building for the soft opening this Thursday and the real grand opening on November 6 for Art After Dark. The address is 844 Monterey Street, just 5 doors down from our store and next to Brandy Melville. I'm really excited for this opportunity and I will be posting more soon! Thank you for your kind words of support and stay tuned. &Design

Hello friends! I apologize for the radio silence but I've been head down working on putting my new Studio together and haven't posted my progress because Daniel has been off the last couple days and I want him to share it with him in person first rather than on a post. ☺️ I was supposed to do the same, but I am SO beyond excited to see it take shape that I couldn't stay away, and I've made some great progress. I must say that unpacking is more fun than packing and starting with a blank & curated slate feels awesome! Thank you again for all your kind words of encouragement and I promise to share the progress soon!

Halloween has officially arrived at the JunkGirls! Ellen has out done herself with her Halloween assemblages and she had so much fun creating them! She used a big bunch of the vintage and antique doll parts we found in Washington (thank you again, {πš•πš’πšœπšŠ πšœπš˜πšžπšŽπš›πšœ } 🐿) and have been hoarding all year, plus found objects, bases, cans, fabrics and other findings to create her best Halloween yet! We will be featuring this big table of creepy goodness at tonight's Art After Dark and look forward to sharing them with you! Brava, Ellen! It was so fun watching you make these and we're excited tonshare them!

And there you have it! My warehouse is officially empty and I handed the landlord the keys today! I decided to let go of my warehouse and put my non- storage part of my Studio in the beautiful back room at our store in mid-August with the deadline date of September 30, knowing this was going to be a huge push. My warehouse space held 5 years of materials and supplies and my plan was to go through every single item, keeping what spoke to me, storing in our new storage unit what I wanted to keep and selling/donating/recycling and sharing what I didn't. We decided this timeline as a team because there was no way I could be present at the store at the same time as getting all this done and I also needed a co-captain to help me navigate the changes at the store at the same time as moving out of my warehouseband everything in-between. I am so thankful to Melissa for holding down the fort with Ellen, Patti, Milla, Eden and Stephanie and to Daniel for his grace under pressure, his humor, his cool headedness, his kindness and his gumption. I couldn't have done this without him and everyone else and I am very grateful that this chapter is closed. Now I get to focus on putting my new studio together exactly how I want it and open my new Gallery in just a few short weeks! Thank you all for your words of encouragement, your likes and hearts and following along. You kept us all moving forward and it meant a lot. I'll be posting more about my new studio soon, but tonight, we relax! πŸ₯³πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸŽ‰

I have some very exciting news to share! Coming mid-October, we are opening the new Jenny K Art & Design Gallery in its own gallery space, 5 doors down from the JunkGirls location in the Sandbox Kids space next to Brandy Melville! It's a beautiful brick-filled open space with lots of room to display my larger art, lighting, sculpture and furniture. I've missed having my own Gallery since Cambria and we are starting out by launching it as a pop up through the Holidays to begin. We've been quietly working on this while moving my studio to our backroom - it's going to be so much easier having it all closer together!
A huge and grateful shout out to Therese of The SLO Collection for seeing & hearing my vision, the belief in me and this incredible opportunity ❀️ And never fear! The JunkGirls location isn't going anywhere and this will allow even more space to display my smaller art, Melissa's art, Ellen's assemblagea and everything else that makes our store what it is. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to opening (Oct 22 πŸ˜‰) and thank you for your support!

We are making progress! Two more days until the big move out of my current warehouse space and into my new Studio in the back, back room at the store! It's been an epic amount of work - from the organizational changes and moves at the store to make room for me, to the loading into our new storage facilities (Daniel set it up so I can literally "go shopping" to find my backstock of materials ❀️) to the big move this Friday into the store, and then will be the setting it all back up again. Its been great going through my materials and letting go of things that don't speak to me and getting re-aquainted with the things that do. Here's a quick video of where we are and me deleriously sorting metal to take into the scrap yard (my 3rd load!) I promise we will be posting about other wonderful things soon, but in the meantime, thank you for your patience while we keep talking about this move! πŸ“£ A huge and special shout out to Daniel for his unwavering patience, steady focus, muscle and cheerleading throughout this month. It's been a beast and I cannot thank him enough! I can't wait to see how he helps me style my new space πŸ™ŒπŸ»β˜ΊοΈ.

Whew! What a DAY!! Daniel and I got the letterpress room done, the hallway done and the front room done and ready for our first wave of moving this Saturday. Most of what we're moving that day is going to Storage and the big pieces we sold are going to their new homes. Then, Daniel and I start back to packing my "hug" with that moving happening next Friday. I can honestly say that I am SO excited for this change and digging through bins of stuff I haven't looked in awhile has gotten me even more inspired to make. We've still got a lot on front of us but this progress feels great and we will take it! πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ’ͺ🏻☺️
