Behind the scenes: how we draft estimates with AI

Here's how we use AI in our own shop. After a site walk, our notes and photo descriptions go to an assistant that organizes them into a draft scope using our own line items. Every quantity and price is reviewed by a person before the estimate goes out.

✔ Field notes and photos go in
✔ An assistant drafts the scope and line items
✔ A person reviews every price

Sch 40, Class 200, Class 315: what's the difference?

Schedule pipe has a fixed wall thickness for each size. Class pipe is rated by pressure, using a constant ratio of diameter to wall (SDR). For 1-inch pipe, the walls are about 0.133 in. (Sch 40), 0.063 in. (Class 200, SDR 21) and 0.097 in. (Class 315, SDR 13.5).

✔ Class 200: 200 psi rated, thinner wall
✔ Class 315: 315 psi rated
✔ Sch 40: thicker wall in small sizes

Is your irrigation ready for fall?

As days shorten and nights cool, landscapes need less water, but many controllers keep running summer schedules into November. A quick fall check catches broken heads, overspray onto hardscape and leaks before the rains start.

✔ Reduce run times as temperatures drop
✔ Walk every zone and fix misaligned or clogged heads
✔ Use your smart controller's seasonal adjust

Fresh mulch now holds moisture through the dry stretch still coming and insulates roots once it turns cold. Pair it with a seasonal color swap and a property heads into winter looking intentional, not forgotten.

Coverage test before the season changes

On a recent visit in Santa Clara, our crew ran each zone and walked the beds while the heads were on. A coverage test shows what a controller screen can't: misaligned heads, clogged nozzles and dry spots hiding under ground cover.

✔ Run every zone and watch it, not just the controller
✔ Flag heads that spray hardscape or are blocked by plants
✔ Fix nozzles and alignment before adjusting run times

Does the first rain mean irrigation off?

❌ Myth: The first storm of fall means you can shut irrigation off for the season.

✅ Fact: Early storms are often light and followed by warm, dry weeks. Let a rain sensor or smart controller pause watering, and check soil moisture before turning systems off.

October rain is welcome, but a quarter inch on dry soil rarely reaches the root zone of shrubs and trees. Shutting everything off after one storm is a common cause of fall plant stress.

✔ Use rain delay or a rain sensor instead of a full shutdown
✔ Probe the soil 4 to 6 inches down before deciding
✔ Keep new plantings on a light schedule until regular rains arrive

Build your first automation: email to task list

The easiest first automation is small. Use Gmail filters to label certain emails, then an automation tool such as Zapier, Make or n8n sends them to an AI step that writes a one-line summary and creates a task. You approve the tasks; nothing gets sent automatically.

✔ Trigger: a new email gets a label
✔ Action: AI summarizes it
✔ Result: a task lands in your to-do app
