A properly installed automatic gate should provide security without creating unnecessary risk. When children are around, safety devices, proper installation, and regular testing matter just as much as convenience.

Keep children away from moving gates — automatic gates are not play areas.
• Never allow children to climb, hang on, or ride on a gate.
• Safety photo eyes must be properly installed, aligned, and kept clear.
• Entrapment protection is critical — pinch points and crushing zones should be addressed during installation.
• Never bypass or disable safety sensors.
• Keep remote controls, keypads, and gate controls out of children’s reach.
• Make sure the gate operator is properly selected and professionally installed.
• Test the safety devices regularly to make sure the gate stops or reverses when required.
• Pedestrian access should be separate from the vehicle gate whenever possible.

That annoying squeaking sound is usually your gate’s way of telling you something needs attention.

Here are 5 common reasons:

1. Dry or worn hinges
Hinges need proper lubrication. Without it, metal parts create friction and start making noise.
2. Worn rollers
On sliding gates, damaged or worn rollers can cause squeaking, grinding, and uneven movement.
3. Lack of lubrication
Moving parts require regular maintenance. Dirt, dust, and dry components can quickly create unnecessary friction.
4. Gate misalignment
If the gate starts sagging or shifting out of position, extra pressure is placed on hinges, rollers, and other hardware.
5. Loose or damaged hardware
Bolts, brackets, bearings, and other components can loosen or wear over time, causing vibration and unwanted noise.

Don’t ignore unusual gate sounds. A small squeak today can turn into a bigger repair later.

Not every gate opener problem means you need a brand new motor.

In many cases, the issue can be repaired. It might be a sensor, wiring, control board, battery, limit setting, or another component that is causing the problem.

If the opener is older, has been repaired several times, has serious internal damage, or no longer meets current safety requirements, replacing it may make more sense and save you money in the long run.

At Automatic Gate Mates, we work with LiftMaster gate operators and always try to look at the whole system before recommending what to do next.

Sometimes a repair is all you need. Sometimes replacement is the smarter choice.
