An Ecological Gardening and Design Coop set out to support Santa Clara County and beyond to conserve water, restore and build CA native flora & fauna, while transforming urban spaces into beautiful, fun, ecological and full of life outdoor living spaces. Smart Yards Co-op is set up to address the urgent need California faces for water conservation by using:

Horticultural techniques

Permaculture design principles

Native and drought-tolerant plants that are children and pet friendly

Native and drought tolerant ground covers

Non-toxic and reusable materials

Greywater design and installation systems

Mediterranean, Woodland, Contemporary, California Coastal, Zen or Rainwater gardens

Edible herb and food forest type gardens

Amenities such as pergolas, play yards, patios, eatable, chicken coops, fruit trees, composting systems and spaces for fun and relaxation

In our workshops, we explore this beautiful web of planetary interconnection and what it means to care for the places we call home.

They’re loving the heat, so sweet, juicy, and full of summer abundance.

And yes, they’re part of an ecosystem. 🌱
No lawn here, instead, a living landscape filled with biodiversity, pollinators, food, healthy soil, and abundance.

This is permaculture: working with nature, creating connections, and letting the garden give back. 🌿💚

Dry-laid, stacked natural stone, an artful, ancestral practice woven into our ecological outdoor design and built spaces.

Beyond beauty, these stone structures create habitat for native species, allow water to move naturally through the landscape, and bring texture, function, and a sense of place to the garden.

Working with natural materials, honoring traditional knowledge, and designing with nature rather than against it. 🌎💧🌱

So much fun to be part of the solution, one garden, one ecosystem, one beautiful space at a time.

🍂🌼 As summer fades, the garden keeps giving.

Autumn has its own kind of beauty, softer light, cooler days, and flowers that continue to bloom just when many pollinators need them most. 🐝🦋

These late-season blooms offer nectar and pollen to bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other garden visitors, helping create a continuous source of nourishment as the seasons change.

At Smart Yards, we love designing gardens that don’t just look beautiful, they work as living ecosystems, supporting soil, water, plants, wildlife, and people through every season.

So as summer says goodbye, let’s celebrate the flowers that keep showing up. 🌿💛

What was once a front yard filled with weeds, compacted soil and pest problems has become a beautiful, living ecosystem. 🐝🦋🌿

We transformed the space with California native plants, healthier soil, habitat for pollinators and a water-wise irrigation system, creating a garden that works with nature rather than against it.
