Happy National Intern Day!

Today we celebrate two outstanding members of our summer team: Amy Peralta and Brensen Manding who have already made meaningful contributions to our projects while gaining hands-on experience alongside our engineering team.

Both from Cal Poly SLO, Brensen is completing his master’s degree, and Amy has recently earned her undergraduate degree. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to learn make them wonderful additions to the team.

At Daedalus, we’re committed to investing in the next generation of structural engineers by providing meaningful opportunities to learn, collaborate, and grow. We’re excited to see Amy and Brensen continue to develop their skills and make an impact throughout the rest of the summer.

Happy National Intern Day, Amy and Brensen - we’re happy to have you with us!

A contemporary addition to a historic Mission-style home in San Francisco’s Presidio, this project is composed of a series of jewel box spaces, each framed by floor-to-ceiling glass and glazed on three sides.

The design called for an elegant structural solution: slender steel columns support steel roof beams and a remarkably thin roof profile, maximizing transparency while preserving clean architectural lines. A cantilevered concrete slab further enhances the effect, creating the appearance of a floating floor that seamlessly extends into the landscape.

We enjoyed collaborating with the project team, Shands Studio and Forsythe General Contractors Inc. to bring this vision to life and support an architecture that feels both light and grounded, contemporary and timeless.

We’re excited to officially welcome Jamie to the Daedalus team as a Structural Designer!

After interning with Daedalus last summer and continuing part time throughout the year, Jamie joined the team full time in March.

Jamie is passionate about thoughtful structural design, sustainability, and advancing the use of mass timber in the built environment. She is eager to continue developing her skills as an engineer while contributing to the collaborative and creative environment at Daedalus. In addition to project work, she has played an important role in expanding the firm’s social media presence and helping develop Daedalus’ new website.

Jamie has also brought great energy to the office by teaching the team how to slackline, organizing watercolor lunches, and encouraging creativity and connection throughout the day.

We’re very happy to have her as part of the team and look forward to all she will contribute in the years ahead.

L|J Residence is a sculptural compound tucked within ancient oak trees, where architecture and landscape are conceived as one.

The project brings together a Main Residence, Guest House, and Garage/Workshop, connected by a continuous trellis system that provides shading and establishes a cohesive relationship between the structures and the site.

The Main Residence is organized into three distinct wings connected by bridge-like walkways, allowing light, air, and movement to pass fluidly between the spaces.

A single-story concrete wall marks the entry, while a two-story concrete feature anchors the central wing. Steel fin shrouds frame expansive, full-height glazing, including a striking three-story glass wall that extends from basement to roof, integrated with an operable aluminum and wood screen.

A koi pond separates public and private wings, crossed by a glass walkway. A sunken terrace at the basement level opens to a cascading water feature, extending the living space into the surrounding landscape.

Overall, the project reflects a coordinated integration of structure, architecture, and site-balancing performance, clarity, and connection to the surrounding landscape.

This complete renovation and partial expansion of this existing winery embodies a harmonious blend of entrancing ambiance and distinct Californian charm.

The project included lifting half of the building roof by 4 feet, replacing two exterior walls below the raised portion with full-height glazing, addition of a kitchen within the footprint of the existing adjacent building, and the addition of an open accessory structure housing the outdoor kitchen.

Through careful sequencing and structural adaptation, the extension/addition preserves the character of the original building while creating a more open, flexible space for tasting and community.

We are thrilled to have watched Hoover Elementary school come to life from design to construction to occupancy. Utilizing the patented Timberquest detailing for extremely efficient construction, class is now in session for the community. It was immensely rewarding watching and hearing staff, students and families enjoy the new campus at the ribbon cutting last week.

California’s first all-mass timber campus is online and was made possible by the collaboration and commitment of the design and build teams working together with the district for the common goal of delivering safe, beautiful, biophilic, sustainable learning environments.
