L|J Residence is a sculptural compound tucked within ancient oak trees, where architecture and landscape are conceived as one.

The project brings together a Main Residence, Guest House, and Garage/Workshop, connected by a continuous trellis system that provides shading and establishes a cohesive relationship between the structures and the site.

The Main Residence is organized into three distinct wings connected by bridge-like walkways, allowing light, air, and movement to pass fluidly between the spaces.

A single-story concrete wall marks the entry, while a two-story concrete feature anchors the central wing. Steel fin shrouds frame expansive, full-height glazing, including a striking three-story glass wall that extends from basement to roof, integrated with an operable aluminum and wood screen.

A koi pond separates public and private wings, crossed by a glass walkway. A sunken terrace at the basement level opens to a cascading water feature, extending the living space into the surrounding landscape.

Overall, the project reflects a coordinated integration of structure, architecture, and site-balancing performance, clarity, and connection to the surrounding landscape.

This complete renovation and partial expansion of this existing winery embodies a harmonious blend of entrancing ambiance and distinct Californian charm.

The project included lifting half of the building roof by 4 feet, replacing two exterior walls below the raised portion with full-height glazing, addition of a kitchen within the footprint of the existing adjacent building, and the addition of an open accessory structure housing the outdoor kitchen.

Through careful sequencing and structural adaptation, the extension/addition preserves the character of the original building while creating a more open, flexible space for tasting and community.

We are thrilled to have watched Hoover Elementary school come to life from design to construction to occupancy. Utilizing the patented Timberquest detailing for extremely efficient construction, class is now in session for the community. It was immensely rewarding watching and hearing staff, students and families enjoy the new campus at the ribbon cutting last week.

California’s first all-mass timber campus is online and was made possible by the collaboration and commitment of the design and build teams working together with the district for the common goal of delivering safe, beautiful, biophilic, sustainable learning environments.

Set lightly among redwoods and oaks on a steeply sloping lot, Pavilion in the Oaks is an extension of a 1970s hillside home that integrates into its landscape. The pavilion entertaining space opens on 3 sides to the wood deck upon which it sits and has adjacent sauna, gym and restroom. Wood and steel columns support cantilevered beams making the structure appear to float above the ground and have a light footprint, physically and sustainably. A fully glazed bridge connects the pavilion directly to the existing residence.

The pavilion and bridge complete a three-sided courtyard that has become the home’s primary summer gathering space. Existing redwood and oak trees were carefully considered in the deck framing, hugging their trunks with ample space to grow further and blurring the boundary between built and natural environments.

This modern longitudinal pavilion has an open and adaptable plan and is organized around a cedar-clad core housing the sauna and bathroom. Exposed cedar roof framing supports multiple skylights, bringing filtered daylight into the spaces and echoing the shifting light of the surrounding grove. The result is an architecture that balances exposure and shelter—where structure, material, and landscape work together as one.

Travis Unified School District has new classrooms for the first time in a decade and they’re TimberQuest™ buildings!

Golden West Middle School welcomes 6th graders back to over 19,000 square feet of high-quality learning environments which include classrooms, restrooms, a teacher workroom, basketball, and tennis courts. This expansion supports Travis Unified School District’s long-term goals for growth, flexibility, and student well-being.

The four one-story buildings were constructed in just six months and the speed of construction was due in large part to the TimberQuest™ prefabrication system, including our newly-patented details!

We are proud to share the newly patented TimberQuest™ shear wall system. Thank you to our partners TimberQuest™ for your teamwork in making this innovative system a reality.

The patent covers our innovative system design with prefabricated wall panels, roof panels, beams, and method of assembly. A key feature is our custom base angle subframe, which allows fully finished wall panels to be completed offsite with speedy installation to the foundation. The mass timber roof system also includes glue-laminated beams and prefabricated roof panels with integrated mechanical chases for efficient installation.

We look forward to continuing this collaboration with TimberQuest™ to deliver sustainable, efficient, beautiful and biophilic learning environments that support local communities.

Perched on a knoll in Portola Valley, this custom home blends concrete, steel, and timber in a clean, contemporary composition.

The light-filled upper level framed with steel Vierendeel trusses is rotated 30 degrees in plan, opening expansive views to the valley and the San Francisco Bay. Glued laminated timber (GLT) floors, doubling as finished ceilings, add warmth and texture to the home.

A sculptural guest house completes the site with a double cantilevered concrete deck with more beautiful views.

As we complete the Emergency Generator Enclosure for the Los Altos Community Center, we are
reminded of the great collaboration with Noll & Tam Architects and Gonsalves & Stronck Construction to
bring this beautiful Community Living Room for all ages to life.

The Timber framing, highlighted by exposed glulam rafters, custom trusses, and cedar trellises, creates
warm, inviting gathering spaces throughout the building.

The project was designed to achieve LEED Gold Equivalency and is equipped to function as an
emergency operating center and shelter, reinforcing its impact on this community.

It’s Crush Season in Wine Country 🍷🍇

As grapes are being harvested across Napa Valley, we’re reminded of one of our favorite collaborations like the Quintessa Winery in St. Helena.

We always love looking back at this project, especially this time of year when the vineyards glow with fall colors. From fully open to completely enclosed, the architecture achieves a seamless inside-outside connection, framed by elegant, thin structural lines that quietly support the design rather than compete with it.

Projects like this exemplify how thoughtful engineering can enhance architectural intent, allowing the experience of space, light, and nature to take center stage.
