In Tulare County, California, the Mineral King Renewable Energy project distributed $7,500 in community grants during Q2 2026 to three local organizations supporting youth sports, youth boxing, and cultural events.

The 200-MW solar-and-storage project, developed by Vesper Energy, is expected to generate enough electricity to serve more than 20,000 California homes once completed. Planned across roughly 2,000–2,500 acres, the project combines ground-mounted solar with battery storage, helping shift renewable electricity toward periods of higher demand.

Beyond clean power, projects like this can deliver broader economic and social benefits—including local employment, community investment, grid support, and reduced reliance on fossil-fuel generation. With completion expected in 2029, Mineral King demonstrates how renewable energy development can contribute to communities even before a project begins generating power.

California is positioning itself at the center of America’s next generation of grid infrastructure.

Heron Power plans to build its first large-scale manufacturing facility in Morgan Hill, California, producing its 5-MW Heron Link power conversion system for energy storage and data center applications. The facility is expected to represent more than 40 GW of annual manufacturing capacity, with production targeted for late 2027. Heron plans to invest over $100 million and create more than 600 jobs.

Heron Link is designed to connect renewable energy, battery storage and data centers directly to medium-voltage transmission without a transformer, potentially simplifying grid connections. The project comes as AI, EVs, solar and storage accelerate electricity demand while the US remains heavily dependent on imported grid equipment.

Supported partly by a $26.4 million California Competes award, the factory signals growing investment in domestic power-electronics manufacturing—and the infrastructure needed to support America’s rapidly expanding electricity demand.

India’s solar manufacturing ecosystem is entering a critical phase of transition. The current domestic solar cell shortage is being viewed as a short-term challenge as manufacturers rapidly expand capacity to meet local-content requirements under ALMM List-II.

India currently has around 32 GW of enlisted solar cell capacity, while total cell manufacturing capacity is projected to reach approximately 100 GW by December 2027. Meanwhile, ALMM-enlisted module manufacturing capacity has already crossed 217 GW, highlighting the growing need for stronger backward integration.

Companies are responding with major investments. Vikram Solar is targeting 9 GW of domestic cell capacity by FY27, while Avaada expects to reach 6 GW. The shift is more than a capacity expansion story. It represents India’s move from module assembly toward end-to-end solar manufacturing, strengthening supply-chain resilience and reducing dependence on overseas components.

The near-term mismatch could create pressure, but the long-term direction points toward a more integrated and self-reliant solar industry.

California’s EV fleet could become a major grid asset.

A new report from GridLab, Kevala and E3 highlights the untapped potential of EVs and distributed energy resources to improve grid reliability and affordability.

California is projected to have 9.7 million light-duty EVs on its roads by 2036, representing more than 110 GW of behind-the-meter capacity. The report estimates that enrolling just 10% of those EVs in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) programs could provide roughly 30% of California’s cumulative utility-scale storage procurement target for 2036.

Unlocking that potential will require better program design. Researchers recommend standardized, performance-based programs that compensate customers for measurable grid services rather than simply enrollment. As renewable generation expands, EVs could charge when electricity is abundant and return power when demand rises—effectively transforming parked vehicles into flexible grid resources.

The next major energy-storage opportunity may already be sitting in California’s driveways.

Can floating solar and urban wildlife coexist?

Los Angeles is putting that question to the test at Encino Reservoir, where a 5 MW floating solar project is moving forward after extensive environmental review.

Eight wildlife surveys conducted between April and July 2025 documented 60 species around the reservoir—including 54 birds, four mammals, three reptiles and one amphibian. The federally protected Least Bell’s Vireo was not detected.

The project will cover about 10 acres of the reservoir while leaving most of the water open. It will also include ground-mounted solar and a 5 MW/20 MWh iron-flow battery.

LADWP expects the floating array to generate approximately 10,280 MWh annually.

Construction is expected to run from summer 2026 to summer 2027.

Beyond clean electricity, Encino could become a valuable real-world test of how floating solar interacts with urban ecosystems—and whether renewable infrastructure and wildlife can successfully coexist.

Can India’s renewable energy boom keep pace with the grid?

India’s renewable energy pipeline has crossed 150 GW under construction as of June 30, 2026, signaling continued capacity growth.

ICRA expects renewables, including large hydro, to contribute more than 35% of India’s electricity generation by 2029-30, up from 22% in 2024-25.

But transmission constraints are becoming a bottleneck. Grid curtailment, particularly for projects using temporary general network access, can affect project returns and slow deployment.

Bidding activity has cooled, falling from 40.6 GW awarded in 2024-25 to 14.7 GW in 2025-26.

At the same time, battery energy storage is gaining momentum. Awarded BESS capacity reached around 90 GWh by June 2026, highlighting storage’s growing role in grid stability.

The next phase of India’s clean energy growth will depend on faster transmission expansion, timely PPAs, and economically sustainable storage deployment.

Renewable energy project pipeline remains strong with more than 150 GW of projects under construction as on June 30, 2026 even as bidding activity slows; however, curtailment concerns underscore the need for expansion in transmission network and storage capacity.

What if North America’s energy storage boom is also becoming a battery manufacturing boom?

LG Energy Solution has started production at its new Lansing, Michigan manufacturing campus, strengthening the region’s battery supply chain.

The facility is targeting more than 35 GWh of annual lithium battery capacity, producing LFP cells for energy storage systems (ESS) and NMC cells for electric vehicles.

LG Energy Solution has invested more than $2 billion in Lansing since 2022. The site currently employs around 900 people, with employment expected to reach 1,700 at full capacity.

The company also plans to exceed 50 GWh of LFP cell-making capacity in North America by the end of 2026, spanning facilities in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Ontario.

By year-end, approximately 80% of LG Energy Solution’s global ESS capacity is expected to be located in North America.

The expansion signals accelerating investment in domestic battery manufacturing to support grid-scale storage and electrification.

California’s Eastern Kern region is adding a major piece to its clean energy infrastructure with the completion of the 92 MW Sandrini Energy Storage project.

Developed by EDP Renewables North America with Redwood Coast Energy Authority, the battery system sits alongside an existing 300 MW solar farm and can discharge electricity for four hours each evening.

RCEA has purchased 100% of the battery capacity, helping shift renewable electricity from lower-cost daytime hours to periods of higher evening demand.

The project reflects California’s growing reliance on BESS to balance renewable generation, improve grid reliability and extend the value of solar power beyond daylight hours.

More than 16 GW of battery storage has come online across California since 2020, with another 14 GW planned by 2032.
