CMG Landscape Architecture

CMG Landscape Architecture CMG is a mission-oriented landscape architecture studio in San Francisco, CA. We actively engage the public and encourage discourse and sharing ideas.

In 2000, three friends got together and launched CMG Landscape Architecture, an urban design and landscape architecture practice based on invention, creativity, and craft. As a mission-based studio, CMG works to increase social and ecological wellbeing through artful design. At the heart of the practice is attention to public space, how the built environment shapes human interaction, and the way i

nnovation can foster a thriving natural world. Everything we do is predicated on connecting people with each other and with their environment. CMG has earned national recognition and numerous awards for merits in design, social impact and environmental stewardship. Bringing proven value to clients and projects, our long-standing relationships with institutions, community groups, local governments, park conservancies, developers and designers is a testament to our dedication. From Cleveland to Seattle, to our home in the Bay Area, CMG has made a positive impact within landscapes, cities, and the profession. CMG works on a wide range of initiatives, project scales and types, with the philosophy that all of our work accrues as the single overarching project of improving the public realm of our cities. CMG leads community-based design processes for street life and public space planning. We address the issues of sustainability through climate change mitigation and urban resiliency with strategies for sea level rise at waterfront parks, drought-tolerant landscapes and carbon sequestration initiatives. We creatively approach urban ecology through district-wide stormwater management systems and habitat value creation. Each project is distinct, designed for a specific place and shaped by passion and craft. CMG’s team consists of three dozen landscape architects and designers, led by six principals with diverse perspectives and shared values. We are located in the heart of downtown San Francisco — the city that is, in many ways, the overarching master project of our two decades.

CMG is working with the City of Santa Cruz to lead a multidisciplinary team on the Jessie Street Marsh Wetland Enhancement and Trail Project.

The design will expand and restore nearly one acre of wetland habitat, improve flood management, and create new public access through an ADA-accessible interpretive trail. By enhancing habitat value, removing contaminated soils, improving drainage, and providing a welcoming space for the community, this effort will transform Jessie Street Marsh into a healthier and more resilient landscape for people and wildlife.

This is one of four projects CMG is currently working on with the City of Santa Cruz.

Project Team: IMEG Corp, MHC Engineers, Waterways Consulting Inc., H.T. Harvey & Associates, RMA Irrigation, M Lee Corporation

Highlights from our annual CMG Retreat — exploring the Filoli Historic House + Garden and visiting the recently-completed first phase of Flood Park!

The Flood Park project team led us through the site, showing off the new multi-use sports fields, sports courts, walking paths, grilling and picnic areas, and their skills on the pump track. Construction of Phase 2 of the park is scheduled to wrap up this Spring!

We value this time together — sharing reflections on community, connection, creativity, art, challenges, change, and growth.

Cityside Park is a signature part of the 300 acres of parks and open space CMG has envisioned for Treasure Island. The waterfront park spans the western edge of the island, serving as a neighborhood amenity for residents, as well as a regional destination for San Francisco and the larger Bay Area community.

The 6-acre first phase of the park opened in September and connects the neighborhood with the Treasure Island Ferry Terminal, the gateway to Treasure Island from San Francisco. This southern entry point welcomes visitors with a coastal strand garden – filled with meandering paths, native coastal bluff species, and furnishings salvaged from trees from Yerba Buena Island. The Great Lawn provides a central gathering and event space anchored by the “Canopy of Sky," an ethereal art installation by Ned Khan that reveals and amplifies wind, light, and sky.

When complete, the park will include a total of 24 acres set within three additional rooms that will include a diversity of activities and experiences. Learn more about Cityside Park at https://www.cmgsite.com/places/cityside-park/
