There comes a point in every project where the samples have said all they can say.

We’re there on this San Mateo project. A few tiles that looked right in hand read too yellow or too white once they were up, so I swapped them out. Now I’m checking the primary bath ceiling against the microcement and seeing how the rest of the finishes settle in.

This is one of my favorite parts!

Earlier this year I said Deco was on its way back, which was an easy call to make considering I'd been quietly working it into projects for years.

You could stand in this room and not notice any of it, because there isn't a fan or a chevron in sight. It's all in the stepped caps on the sconces, and in that reeded brass pull running the full height of the cabinet. Even the mirror corners are rounded off a touch.

The sconces sit beside the mirror instead of above it. That's the whole difference between light on your face and shadows under your eyes. Everything else in here comes from the skylight you can spot in the reflection.

One vanity decided everything else in this room.

Art Deco has been near the top of my trend list this year, and this bathroom from the archives is a good example of it. Swipe to the end and we’ll break down where the Deco turns up.

It was the fluting that got us. It’s carved from one solid block of marble, and the whole thing sits on a slim brass frame. That vanity became the piece that defined the room, so we designed everything else around it. Robern made the Claudette to recall old Hollywood, which is the same era this room keeps pointing back to. From there we ran the black and white marble mosaic straight up the walls so it reads as one piece.

People always ask what white we use, and a lot of the time it’s an easy one to answer. This is it.

Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore is a white with just enough warmth. Soft, timeless, and it never competes with the wood tones or the natural light. We use it on a lot of our projects, and this home is a good example of why.

It recently turned up in Real Simple’s roundup of Benjamin Moore neutrals, with a little input from us, which was a fun moment. Here it is doing its thing in this space.

Everyone pictures this job as fabric swatches and finished rooms. Some of it is. Most days look more like this...

School drop off, then out to the job site, chasing the right hardware finish, going over budgets, and back at the desk before it all starts again. A lot of moving parts, and I wouldn’t trade any of it.

Swipe through a day in the life. And by 5pm? Go ask your dad.

The cabinets didn’t move. Everything else about them did.

A fresh color took the light cabinetry from rustic to sophisticated, and that opened the door for the marble slab backsplash, a new island countertop, and a kitchen that finally feels like itself.

Designed this kitchen in 2018 for a family I’ve known for years. Eight years later, their daughter (who now works at DoorDash) helped bring a national brand shoot into her parents’ home.

What I love about this: the design has held up well enough that a national brand chose it as a backdrop almost a decade later. And there’s something quietly full-circle about a kitchen designed for a family becoming part of their adult daughter’s professional life!
