Make the most of a small space with ANGD!

This small corridor needed a pop of color and thick privacy screening for our stylish clients.

Six years ago we installed purple campanula and red dahlias to provide a cheery greeting against a backdrop of bamboo contained in sleek Corten steel planters, and this is the view today!

Gardens are shaped by the people who care for them, and David J. C. Austin was one of those people.

After joining the family business in 1990, David spent more than 30 years helping David Austin Roses grow into a company known by gardeners around the world. He believed in doing things well and worked to make sure the roses his family became known for could be enjoyed by people far beyond England.

We’re grateful to grow a handful of David Austin Roses here at Alexander Nurseries & Garden Design. Every season, they’re a reminder of the people whose dedication helped make these remarkable roses part of gardens across the world.

Thank you, David, for everything you gave to the gardening community. Your work and your love of roses will continue to inspire gardeners for years to come.

Tomorrow we’re opening our Etsy shop back up!

We took a short break, but we’re excited to start shipping again. If you’ve been waiting to order a rose or another plant from us, you’ll be able to do that starting tomorrow.

We can’t wait to get plants packed up and on their way to new gardens again.

See you tomorrow!

Not every rose needs flowers to make an impression.

Rosa Kamtschatica keeps the show going long after the blooms are gone, covering itself in bright red hips that add color to the garden well into fall. That’s one of the things that makes this species so special.

Rose hips are the seed pods that develop after the flowers fade. Some gardeners remove them to encourage more blooms, while others leave them on because they add so much seasonal interest.

They’re also edible and are often used to make teas, jams, jellies, and syrups. If you’re harvesting them, wait until they’re fully red or orange and have softened a bit. If not, they’re just as enjoyable left on the plant or left for the birds to enjoy.

Would you leave the hips on or clip them off? What do you look for most in a rose: flowers, fragrance, or hips?
