Pickle Athletics brings Oakland’s first social pickleball club to Telegraph Avenue, transforming a long-empty industrial space into a dynamic hub for sport, wellness, and community.

The first black-owned pickle ball club combines indoor courts with thoughtfully designed amenities—including recovery zones, a kitchen and bar, sauna, and lounge—to create an experience that extends well beyond the game. More than a place to play, Pickle Athletics is a social destination where members, and the public, can connect, recharge, and spend time together before and after matches or just come by to enjoy a glass of wine and the vibe.

The design balances performance and hospitality, integrating active and social spaces to support both movement and interaction. By layering recreation with gathering, the project reflects a broader shift toward hybrid environments that foster health, connection, and everyday community life.

Field Paoli collaborated with the owners, Kady Pooler and Maryanna Quigless, Eric F. Anderson, Inc., Chromata Retail, and IDF Studio to bring this concept to life in Oakland.

Principal Yann Taylor reflects on the evolution of Stonestown Galleria—a project deeply woven into Field Paoli’s history and the changing story of retail, community, and public space.
At a time when many traditional indoor malls are struggling, Stonestown continues to thrive by evolving into something more than a shopping destination. With a growing mix of dining, grocery, entertainment, wellness, and community-centered experiences, it has become a vibrant gathering place woven into everyday life in San Francisco.
Originally reimagined by Field Paoli in the 1980s, Stonestown helped shape the firm’s approach to placemaking and experiential retail design. Decades later, our team returned to the site as architect of record for the new Whole Foods Market, continuing the evolution of this historic destination.
For us, projects like Stonestown are about more than retail. They’re about creating places where people gather, connect, and build community over time.

Staff Spotlight: Zac Cappelletti
This month, we're spotlighting Zac Cappelletti, whose passion for architecture is rooted in the belief that thoughtful design can improve people's everyday lives. Drawn to the profession for its unique blend of creativity and problem solving, Zac also appreciates the collaborative nature of architecture and the way every successful project is the result of a strong team effort.
A Bay Area native, Zac was born in Oakland and grew up in Richmond and Larkspur, California. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from UC Berkeley and also studied at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor and College of Marin. Looking ahead, he's excited by the possibility of pursuing graduate school to continue expanding his knowledge and skills.
Since joining Field Paoli, Zac has especially enjoyed contributing to the Ghirardelli Kiosk and Serramonte Mall projects, where he's had the opportunity to help bring dynamic retail environments to life while working alongside a talented team.
Outside the office, Zac enjoys expressing his creativity through painting, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, and spending time at the beach.
We're grateful for Zac's creativity, thoughtful approach, and collaborative spirit, and we're excited to see all he continues to accomplish.

We are excited to announce that we have successfully renewed our Green Business Certification! Field Paoli has participated in the program since 2010, because being Social at Every Scale starts with responsible stewardship of the environment we all share. In the last year alone, we have saved over 65,000 lbs. of CO2 and 96,000 kWh of energy, diverted more than 32,000 lbs. of solid waste and reduced our hazardous waste production by over 9 gallons. As June wraps San Francisco in a sea of color, we are reminded of how lucky we are to watch the vibrant energy of the Pride Parade unfold right below our Market Street windows. Coming together to cheer on the parade has become a favorite tradition here at Field Paoli, filling our office with incredible community spirit.

For us, creating spaces where everyone feels welcome starts from within. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive culture that reflects the diverse world we design for, and we proudly stand with the LGBTQIA+ community today and every day.

Here’s to honoring the history, celebrating the beautiful spectrum of identity, and continuing to design a more equitable future where everyone truly belongs.
