It may be time to revisit Downtown San Diego.

In a recent article for Commercial Observer , Principal Landscape Architect David McCullough, PLA, ASLA, takes a closer look at the forces shaping Downtown’s future; from new investment and evolving market trends to office vacancies, public safety, and the role of thoughtfully designed public spaces.

As downtown continues to evolve, David explores the opportunity to create a more connected urban environment that serves the community beyond the 9-to-5 work week.

There’s a lot underway in Downtown San Diego. Read David’s insights on what’s already changing downtown and why the details of our public spaces matter more than ever.

“How do we create meaningful outdoor environments when the same limited space is expected to be planted, usable, accessible, water-conscious, and ember resistant?”

In a new article on the McCullough blog, Associate Adam Crowell explores City of San Diego new Zone 0 requirement and how the restriction impacts the design process for landscape architects.

While Zone 0 may add an extra layer of complexity, Adam argues that the new requirement presents an opportunity for greater coordination and, ultimately, more intentional design.

Whether you’re directly affected by this new design constraint or curious how it will shape the development of our outdoor environments, Adam’s article presents a fresh, insightful perspective on navigating San Diego’s new Zone 0 requirements.

“The future of great design lies not in making every place seem the same, but in helping every place become more fully itself.” In case you missed it, William Glockner and Benjamin Arcia sat down to discuss the topic of contextual relevance.

Welcome to the City Heights Performance Annex! 🎭

McCullough was thrilled to tour the project with the team and share first looks of the updated outdoor space.
Known for hosting a wide variety of live performances and lessons for adults and children, the City Heights Performance Annex has been undergoing major improvements and is set to reopen by the end of the summer!

McCullough’s Studio Design Leader, Benjamin Arcia, worked alongside SmithGroup and City of San Diego to design an outdoor space that not only invites visitors to gather and connect, but is also designed for resilience.

At the center of the courtyard, you’ll find a Ginkgo tree. Visit the Annex during autumn and you might witness it’s leaves turn a bright golden yellow before dropping. Fun fact: ginkgo trees are one of the oldest living tree species, having endured for more than 200 million years and outliving the dinosaurs!

We are looking forward to seeing the Annex serve the community of City Heights for generations to come!🌿
