🍂 POOL CLOSING 101: ABOVE-GROUND VS. INGROUND! 💦
Closing your pool for the season? The basics are similar, but above-ground and inground pools require a few different steps to protect your equipment and plumbing through winter. Here's a checklist! 👇
1️⃣ BALANCE THE WATER CHEMISTRY
💧 Above-Ground: Adjust pH (7.4–7.6), alkalinity (80–120 ppm), and calcium hardness to the recommended range for your pool. Add a winterizing chemical kit or Perma Salt Winterate.
💧 Inground: Test and balance your water using the same guidelines, adjusting calcium hardness for your pool's surface. Add the appropriate winter chemicals based on your pool's size and sanitizer system.
2️⃣ CLEAN & CLEAR THE POOL
💧 Above-Ground: Vacuum the floor, brush the liner, and skim away debris. Remove ladders, steps, and accessories for winter storage.
💧 Inground: Vacuum, brush the walls and steps, and remove debris. Take out ladders, handrails, automatic cleaners, and other removable accessories.
3️⃣ LOWER WATER & WINTERIZE PLUMBING
💧 Above-Ground: Lower the water below the skimmer and upper return, unless your winterizing setup uses approved skimmer covers or plugs that allow a higher level. Disconnect and drain exposed hoses. Most standard above-ground systems don't require a plumbing blowout.
💧 Inground: Blow out underground plumbing lines with the appropriate equipment and seal them with winter plugs to prevent freezing.
4️⃣ DRAIN & PROTECT EQUIPMENT
💧 Above-Ground: Disconnect and completely drain the pump, filter, and hoses. Clean and store removable equipment and components in a dry, freeze-free location.
💧 Inground: Remove drain plugs and winterize the pump, filter, heater, chlorinator, and any additional equipment. Drain and protect components according to manufacturer instructions. Many inground systems remain installed throughout winter.
5️⃣ SECURE YOUR WINTER COVER
💧 Above-Ground: Position your winter cover over the pool and secure it with a cover cable and winch or the recommended fastening system. Use an air pillow when recommended for your pool and cover.
💧 Inground: Install your safety cover or winter tarp, securing it with spring anchors or water tubes, depending on the cover type. Check that everything is properly fastened.
⚠️ REMEMBER: Every pool is different! Always follow your pool, equipment, and winter cover manufacturer's specific closing instructions.
