Metropolitan Contracting METRO is the premier general contractor for commercial construction in Austin & San Antonio, Texas. We specialize in private sector construction.

METRO was organized in 1986 in San Antonio Texas and has successfully completed more than 8,000 projects, with a total value exceeding One and a Half Billion Dollars. We employ more than 80 people between our Austin and San Antonio offices. Our expertise is constructing healthcare facilities, office buildings, religious structures, restaurants, and industrial projects. We build projects from the ground up, finish out existing spaces, and have renovated some of Texas’ most beautiful historic buildings. Our peers have recognized our work with over two dozen Excellence in Construction and safety awards, including two coveted Eagle Awards, the highest award given in Associated Builders and Contractors’ national competition. Some of the most meaningful projects we build are the ones that help others.

We have been fortunate to work with nonprofits like SA Hope Center, The MAC at Morgan's and the San Antonio Humane Society to create spaces that support the work they do every day.

We know nonprofit projects come with unique goals, budgets and responsibilities. That’s why our team works closely with each organization from the beginning, helping them make the most of their resources while keeping their mission at the center of the project.

A staircase can be more complex than it looks.

On our Norton Rose Fulbright project at Frost Tower, our team constructed an interstitial staircase that connects multiple floors within the same tenant space. In this case, the new steel staircase connected the 17th and 18th floors and became a major feature of the office.

Creating the opening required removing more than 300 square feet of existing concrete slab, including a structural concrete joist. With limited access, the supporting steel and staircase components had to be brought up in pieces, then assembled and installed on the 17th floor. The finished staircase features glass guardrails, stainless steel cladding and large-format porcelain stair treads from Italy.

It took careful planning and coordination to make it all come together, and the finished staircase became one of the standout features of the space. Experience with details like this helps our team take on complex interior construction with confidence.

Series | Post 3 of 3 — Morningside Medical Resort, Short-Term Rehabilitation

THREE EVENTS. TWO DAYS. ONE INCREDIBLE NEW CHAPTER.

Our final stop: Morningside Medical Resort, the third project in METRO’s transformation of the Morningside Ministries at The Meadows campus.

As general contractor, METRO partnered with Morningside Ministries Senior Living Communities, the project team, and our trade- partners to build a short-term rehabilitation neighborhood combining advanced care with resort-inspired comfort.

The Medical Resort features 24 private rehabilitation suites and spaces supporting recovery, wellness, and daily life. Highlights include:

• Advanced rehabilitation: A PT/OT gym with Keiser equipment and balance and fall prevention training.
• Specialized care: Advanced wound care, trach care, PleurX drain support, and on-site dialysis.
• Private suite comforts: Walk-in showers, ceiling-mounted patient lifts, recliners, and individual climate control.
• Dining and enrichment: An always-available menu, room-service delivery, cognitive activities, and group therapies.
• Resort amenities: Hair care, mini massages, aromatherapy, a coffee bar, and culinary workshops.

This new neighborhood expands The Meadows’ continuum of care for residents and the greater San Antonio community.

Celebrating alongside healthcare professionals, community partners, and the Morningside team was a meaningful close to two days of milestones.

THREE EVENTS. TWO DAYS. ONE INCREDIBLE NEW CHAPTER.

Our Morningside Ministries at The Meadows series continues with the transformation of Kaulbach Pavilion, the second of three projects METRO was proud to help bring to life across The Meadows campus.

As general contractor, METRO partnered with Morningside Ministries Senior Living Communities and the project team on a comprehensive renovation that reimagined Kaulbach Pavilion for Assisted Living and Memory Care.

Kaulbach Pavilion | Assisted Living & Memory Care

The renovation transformed existing spaces into a welcoming 43-residence Assisted Living neighborhood and a new 18-residence Memory Care neighborhood. From thoughtfully designed apartments and community spaces to specialized areas supporting memory care, the project was built around the comfort, safety, independence, and daily needs of residents.

Together, the renovated neighborhoods add 61 residences dedicated to providing personalized care and support at The Meadows. After months of construction and collaboration, celebrating the completed space alongside residents, families, caregivers, and the Morningside community made this milestone especially meaningful.

We are proud to have played a part in creating a welcoming place for residents and their families, alongside the dedicated trade partners whose craftsmanship and collaboration helped bring this transformation to life.

THREE EVENTS. TWO DAYS. ONE INCREDIBLE NEW CHAPTER.

September marked an exciting new chapter at Morningside Ministries at The Meadows, as METRO joined Morningside Ministries Senior Living Communities for three milestone celebrations showcasing the transformation of The Meadows campus.

As general contractor, METRO partnered with Morningside and the project team to bring Morningside Homes, Kaulbach Pavilion, and Morningside Medical Resort to life, strengthening the continuum of care available across the campus.

Over the next few posts, we’re taking you inside each project and the celebrations that marked their completion.

First up: Morningside Homes | Long-Term Care

Following the THE GREEN HOUSE® Project model, Morningside Homes reimagines long-term care through a more residential approach. Rather than a traditional care facility, METRO constructed four individual, residential-style homes, each designed for 12 residents, combining the comfort and familiarity of home with the functionality needed to support around-the-clock care.

Together, the homes add 48 new residences to The Meadows and introduce the first Green House homes in San Antonio and South Texas. After months of construction and collaboration, seeing these homes filled with residents, families, caregivers, and the Morningside community made this milestone especially meaningful.

We are proud to have played a part in creating a place that will serve residents and their families for years to come, alongside the dedicated trade-partners whose craftsmanship and collaboration helped bring this project to life.

A temporary space still deserves a strong foundation!
