Lake Flato Architects We believe in creating environments that enrich communities and nurture life. With offices in San Antonio, Austin, and Portland.

Lake Flato creates environments that are tactile and modern, environmentally responsible, and authentic, artful, and well-crafted. The firm’s designs evolve from an appreciation for the pragmatic solutions of vernacular architecture, the honesty of modernism, and the context of our rich and varied landscape. By employing sustainable strategies to a wide variety of building types and scales, the Lake Flato generates architecture, interiors, and urban design & planning solutions that conserve energy and natural resources while creating high performance buildings and healthy built environments.

We are excited to welcome the architecture community to San Antonio for the Texas Society of Architects/AIA Annual Conference & Design Expo.

From October 15 to 17 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Lake Flato will lead seven sessions, each exploring how architecture can serve people and place through sustainability, adaptive reuse, urban design, extreme heat research, circularity, ecology, and AI in practice.

San Antonio has been our home base for more than four decades. The city’s strong sense of community is reflected in its architecture, from historic missions and plazas to new urban districts that connect us to the historic river and to each other. It feels fitting that this year’s theme to GATHER invites us all here.

Our work has always sought to explore the role architecture can play in reconnecting people to nature. Wood transforms the structural demands of a building into a warm and tactile experience reflective of the natural world. With 15 mass timber projects completed or under construction, Lake Flato’s commitment to mass timber is a carbon-fighting strategy that also celebrates the timeless qualities of beauty, nature and craft.

We are excited to participate in the Mass Timber+ Conference and to share insights from three mass timber higher education projects: University of Pennsylvania Amy Gutmann Hall, Trinity University Business and Humanities District, and University of Denver Burwell Center for Career Achievement. Swipe for an in-depth preview of Lake Flato Associate Partner Kerry Phillips’ upcoming talk in collaboration with Buro Happold Associate Principal Rachel Modica.

We recently celebrated the grand opening of Montana State University’s first mass timber building, Gianforte Hall. Designed as a vibrant and welcoming hub, the new Gianforte Hall houses the School of Computing as well as Music Technology and Film & Photography programs, bringing together a diverse student population to create synergies between disciplines.

Using a material palette inspired by Montana’s landscape, including the largely exposed Douglas Fir timber structure primarily sourced from within the state, the interior spaces were designed to feel soothing and welcoming, creating optimal learning environments where students can thrive. Collaboration and social spaces are organized to leverage natural daylight and broad views of the mountain landscape beyond.

We are honored to be included in Forbes' America's Top 200 Residential Architects and America's Best-in-State Residential Architects lists.

As part of the recognition, Evan Morris, partner at Lake Flato, joined a Forbes roundtable conversation with Amy Dvorak, Leo Marmol FAIA (Marmol Radziner) and Katherine Chia FAIA (Desai Chia Architecture PC) to explore a question that grows more pressing every year: how do we design homes to last?

For us, the answer begins with restraint. "Our homes must be more simple, more durable, more elemental, less complex from a systems standpoint," he says. It is an approach that treats resiliency not as an afterthought, but as a foundational way of building that can weather fire, changing families, and the passage of time.

He also speaks to something harder to measure. In an age drawn toward optimization, it's a timely reminder that the most enduring architecture still leaves space for the human hand. Reflecting on the unexpected moments that so often become the soul of a project, Evan notes, "We have to preserve the process that makes room for that to happen."

We are grateful to Forbes for the recognition, our clients for entrusting us with their most intimate spaces, and our Residential Studio for their care and precision that make each of our residential projects sing.

We’re excited to welcome the AIA CRAN (Custom Residential Architects’ Network) Symposium to our hometown of San Antonio!

Lake Flato Partner Evan Morris will deliver a keynote, exploring the evolution of our practice and the relationship between craft, architecture, and interiors.

The symposium will also include tours of three Lake Flato residences led by Laura Kapp Jensen, Gus Starkey, Vicki Yuan, and Matt Wallace: 52 Ford Modified, Olmos Park Residence, and Armour Place.

We look forward to sharing a little of San Antonio—and our work—with residential architects from around the country. Swipe for more details, or learn more about the symposium here: https://bit.ly/476b0Um

Over the past decade, our Austin office has grown alongside the city through the trust and collaboration of incredible clients, partners, colleagues, and friends. As the office has evolved, it has become a reflection of the breadth of Lake Flato’s practice—with all of our studios represented and architecture, interiors, planning, and urban design coming together under one roof.

That integration has created new opportunities for collaboration and shaped a diverse body of work throughout Austin, Central Texas, and beyond.

As we celebrate out Austin Office’s 10-year anniversary milestone this week, we’re grateful for the people, projects, and relationships that have shaped our first decade—and looking forward to all that comes next.

Our team recently took a trip out to the Hill Country to visit a custom residence in progress. On a tour led by Jayme Manion, we walked through each design move as the house has begun to take shape over an intensive period of daily collaboration, beginning with input from the homeowners, expertise from our engineers and consultants, and finally, the craft of builders who materialize the vision.

The process of designing and building a house is intimate, consuming, and rewarding. We draw inspiration first from the landscape and environment as the initial threads with which we weave a narrative about what it should feel like to experience the house. Often, if not always, the landscape guides the big moves: which way the building wants to face, where the big open spaces will be, which views should be framed. In this case, the porch the length of the house and the large sliding glass doors will leverage the view down to the water.

From an initial site walk, to a loose sketch, to this phase in construction where ideas have transformed into something physical, each residential project is an opportunity to shape the owner’s connection to the landscape.

Thank you Wallpaper* magazine for recently featuring La Barroneña, a meaningful transformation of the first house completed by Lake Flato 40 years ago.

Set amid the wild brush and gnarled mesquite trees of South Texas, La Barroneña was a project first commissioned for a family who wanted a close connection to the land. The original house was conceived almost like a tent, and often referred to as "more porch than house." The essential ideas for the home —rooted in landscape, material honesty, and climatic responsiveness—would go on to shape the ethos of Lake Flato. Informal screened-in living areas and open porches encircle the indoor kitchen and extend as covered breezeways to the sleeping quarters at either end of the house.

Forty years later, the family passed down the ranch to the next generation, and with that transition came thoughtful renewal. The renovation honors the integrity of the original design while refining essential spaces—modernizing the kitchen and baths and elevating the overall comfort of the interiors. Importantly, the home’s guiding principles of outdoor living remain unchanged.

That the renovation, forty years later, preserves the home’s fundamental spirit while enhancing its interiors feels both fitting and symbolic—an evolution rather than a reinvention, allowing the next generation to make the place fully their own.

The University of the Incarnate Word’s Founders Hall is officially open! We were honored to join the ribbon-cutting ceremony for this transformative adaptive reuse project only a few miles from our office in San Antonio.

Originally designed in 1955 by Atlee Ayres, our design team sought to thoughtfully restore this International Style landmark structure as the new home for the University of the Incarnate Word’s Liza and Jack Lewis Center for the Americas. Named after the founding Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, the reimagined facility includes flexible classrooms, faculty offices, collaborative student spaces, and areas for public lectures, cultural programming, and community engagement. The design maintains clean lines from its original design and uses materials like bronze, terrazzo, Talavera tile, and wood accents to bring in warmth and the cultural identity of San Antonio, UIW, and the Americas.
