Did you know the official Texas state insect is the Monarch Butterfly?

The Monarch Butterfly was designated as the official insect of Texas by Texas legislature in 1995.

Their migration is a multi-generational trip, which can be up to 3,000 miles. We will typically start seeing the migration here in San Antonio around this time (Sept-Oct), as they make their way towards Mexico. They can travel up to 100 miles per day 😮

They smell with their antennae, and taste with the sensory hairs on their legs and feet 🌸

🐛Once a Monarch Butterfly hatches, it only lives for about 2 to 6 weeks

What can we do to help the monarchs as they migrate?
☆ Grow native milkweed - local species such as green antelopehorn, zizotes, or green milkweed. Milkweed is the ONLY plant a Monarch caterpillar can eat. The toxins in the milkweed is what keeps the monarch butterfly toxic - which is why predators won't eat them.
☆ Grow native nectar plants that flower in the fall. This will give butterflies fuel for their long flight to Mexico. For example, Gregg's Mistflower is a monarch favorite.🌷

We just wanted to wish yall a good Memorial Day.

In 2016, I (Keri) had the absolute honor of visiting Arlington National Cemetery and got to witness the Changing of the Guard for the Tomb of the unknown Soldier. The humility, reverence, and respect from everyone in attendance was palpable. We are so blessed to live in the Home of the Free and the Land of the Brave.

We are beyond proud of our family who has served in the military. The sacrifice is immense, and indescribable.

God Bless the USA and Bless Our Troops 🇺🇸

When we say fleas can come from *anywhere,* we mean it!

Roger purchased this cup today from a store that shall-not-be-named…and the cup was sealed in plastic by the way… 😅

Luckily he noticed the free flea circus that was in the bag before bringing it inside 🙈

This was definitely a first for us! Usually, you’d see German roaches spreading this way. Good thing we know a good pest guy 😉

Happy Mothers Day! 🌸💛

To all the moms out there, you’re doing a great job. Remember you are exactly who your children need 💛

Did you know that some of the best mothers in the insect kingdom are earwigs, wolf spiders, and shield bugs?

Earwigs are remarkably devoted mothers, which is very rare among insects for providing extensive maternal care. They build nests, protect eggs from predators, and clean them to prevent mold. After hatching, mothers guard and feed their nymphs, sometimes through regurgitation, for weeks. In a final act of devotion, some species are eaten by their young, known as “matriphagy”. Talk about giving it ALL to your kids 🫣

Wolf spiders known for exceptional maternal care, carrying their egg sac attached to their spinnerets and, upon hatching, carrying dozens to hundreds of spiderlings on their backs for several weeks. They are active hunters, not web-weavers, and continue to hunt while transporting their young…..and I thought it was hard to go grocery shopping with 3 kids 😵‍💫

Shield bug mothers exhibit "helicopter parenting" by guarding their eggs for weeks, protecting hatched nymphs from predators, and even transferring vital symbiotic bacteria to their young for digestion. This dedication to nourish and protect her babies is extremely rare in the bug kingdom. 🛡️🪲
