Nicholas Arcangeli usually works out of QuarryHouse Atelier Verona along with his father, Eugenio. The master carver came to the Richmond facility seven months ago to finish the carved stone fountains he started in Italy for a Renaissance-style mansion in San Francisco. Sequestered in the Bay Area because of the Pandemic, he stayed with Ed and Missy Westbrook, who enjoyed his cooking and conversation. We caught up with Nicholas before he returned to Verona. Pirro I Visconti Borromeo's late 16th-century Nymphaeum (Nymph's Cave) at his Villa Litta in the Milanese countryside contains a litany of grottos. Designed by architect Martino Bassi, each chamber showcases Greek styled statues set against a baroque backdrop of tuff stone stalactites and mosaics encrusted with colored river pebbles and seashells. When new meets old 🙌 In this Tiburon Residence, QH built walls from rough-hewn quarry face stone blocks of Texas Limestone. By using two natural colors of the stone, a detailed banding visually unites the interiors.

We worked with Lawrence Halprin to create the Agave Trail on Alcatraz Island for the Golden Gate National Park Association. The trail dates from the 1910's. Beginning at the dock area, it continues along the shoreline, and then connects, via a long flight of steps, up the slope to the Parade Ground. We rebuilt the pedestrian path, stairs, and low walls with stones that blend with the original rocks.

This modern dwelling located in a secluded redwood grove has floor to ceiling windows that maximize the views of the natural surroundings. It was on this project that the QH team traveled with the design team to Hunan to see firsthand the remote quarry site and the challenge of carving stone. 🙌

The Art of Legacy

From our offices in San Anselmo, California, we work with an elite clientele from both the public and private sectors and treat every project as unique. We strive to build the best and adhere to strict quality standards. Working with talented landscape architects, architects, builders, and interior designers, we practice the ancient craft of stone masonry in the modern world.

One of our early collaborations was with renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. In addition to private landscapes and gardens, we partnered with Halprin on prestigious public commissions. These included the fabrication of a granite amphitheater at Stern Grove and The Letterman Digital Arts Center grounds, rehabilitation of the Yosemite Falls Corridor, and construction of the Agave Trail on Alcatraz Island. Today, at QuarryHouse we continue to forge creative partnerships in our commitment to “The Art of Legacy.”
