We don't always just do explicitly window or doors, sometimes window-adjacent work is needed and we get to problem solve many years of odd repairs and discover some cool original details we get to reconstruct and interpret with some new detailing!

Oh, and also play pest control as wasps were actively hiding and nesting alllll over this roof

Upper sash for life! The amazing thing about a double hung window is getting to use both upper and lower sash for operation. In Salt Lake City this past week has been warm, but not too hot so I've been keeping my windows open 24/7

Also, that wavy glass shimmer 😍

And that's a wrap! Finished up the last bit of work on this condo window weatherstrip and maintenance project today! Thanks to to showing us the ways of the interlocking install. we did silicone bulb on the upper sash, lower sash, and meeting rail! All new locks, exterior spot re-glazing and all new paint inside and out!

Sometimes the last little bit of a project is the last minute discovery of some rot on a window that wasn't in the original scope. Then of course it continues to rain, etc. We removed the aluminum flashing and replaced the top sill and then installed the bottom sill flashing (sill was covered in literal asphalt and fiberglass mesh underneath...??) so that water wasn't getting trapped behind the wall again! Hopefully this repair lasts a bit longer than the last attempt!

When the shower is tiled all the way up to the lower sash, dissecting the opening from the exterior is the only option!

From felt and gappy/ drafty, to new weatherstripping and better lock placement, sometimes just the little things can improve these old windows tenfold! We used a silicon T-bulb weatherstrip stuck into a dado on the lower sash meeting rail (forgot to take a pic)

This isn't even all the photos from this project. Always thankful for people that choose restoration over replacement. Choosing to put money into a local business where 95% of the expense is labor. Over 320 hours of work and spanning 9 months with the winter season pause. Now completed! 🎊

Thanks to .us for teaching us how to repair in place a piece of broken glass in a zinc window! Steve says he's had to do this many times, I've turned down repairs due to not knowing the tricks to work with zinc in-place. Now I don't have to turn down these types of repairs anymore! We of course used wavy glass to match the originals, just didn't get it on video

Come out and support Steve Jordan this Tuesday!

We have a treat for preservation lovers in Salt Lake this Tuesday!

Steve Jordan, a 50+ year veteran of historic house repair, Cornell-trained preservationist, and the author of The Window Sash Bible, is coming to town, and we're hosting a lunchtime presentation in partnership with Restoration West around his newest book, The Sprung Dance Floor.

The talk covers the fascinating history of sprung dance floors: the mysterious, spring-loaded ballroom floors found in taverns and inns across early America that allowed communities to gather, celebrate, and dance. Steve will dig into the social history, the craftsmanship, and the engineering ingenuity behind these beloved spaces.

Tuesday, April 7 | 12–1 PM | Memorial House, SLC
Free admission | Pay-what-you-can option available
