FAQ Friday: "What is a drip edge and why does it matter?"

A drip edge is a strip of metal flashing that runs along the edges of your roof, the eaves and the rakes. Its whole job is simple. It guides water off the edge and into the gutter instead of letting it sneak behind the gutter and soak into your fascia and roof deck.

It is required by code, and it is cheap. That is exactly why it gets skipped. A crew racing to hit a low price will sometimes leave it off, or reuse the old bent edge that is already worn out. You do not notice on day one. Then a couple years later the fascia is rotting and water is getting where it should not.

Small piece of metal, big job. On every roof we do, the drip edge goes on right.

🍂 Before Fall Gets Here, Take a Look at Your Roof

September is here, which means cooler weather and falling leaves are not too far away.

Before fall really gets started, it is worth taking a few minutes to look around your home. Check for things like missing or lifted shingles, debris collecting on the roof, clogged gutters, damaged flashing, or anything that just does not look quite right.

Sometimes a small issue can sit there unnoticed until the next stretch of heavy rain comes through.

And you do not have to know exactly what you are looking at. If something seems off, give G and Bros a call. We can take a look, let you know what we see, and be honest about whether it needs a repair, replacement, or nothing at all.

Two roofing systems on one Salisbury, MD home 🏠

For this Camden Avenue project, we helped replace the existing roof with GAF Timberline HDZ Charcoal shingles on the pitched sections and a brand new white TPO roofing system on the flat roof section.

This is a great reminder that not every part of a roof should be treated the same. Shingles are great for pitched roofs, but flat roofs need a membrane system like TPO for proper waterproofing and long term performance.

If your home or building has shingles and a flat roof section, make sure you work with a Contractor who understands both.

🏠 Ever heard of step flashing?

It is one of those parts of a roof that most homeowners probably never think about, but it can make a big difference.

Step flashing is installed where your roof meets things like a wall, chimney, or dormer. When it is installed correctly, it helps guide rainwater away from those areas. When it is missing or done incorrectly, that is when leaks can start showing up.

FAQ Friday: "Can I just layer new shingles over the old ones instead of a full tear-off?"

Short answer: usually you can. Most codes allow up to two layers, and it costs less up front. But here is the honest part. A layover covers up everything underneath. Rotted decking, bad flashing, old leaks. We never get to see it, and neither do you.

It also adds weight and traps heat, so the new shingles cook and age faster. That often shortens the life of the roof, and in a lot of cases it voids the manufacturer warranty.

A full tear-off lets our team pull everything back, inspect the deck, fix what is wrong, and start clean. Once in a while a layover is a fair budget choice, and if that is your situation we will tell you. Most of the time, tear-off is the right call.

Yesterday you saw the photos. Today you get to watch it happen.

A church roof is a different kind of job. There is a lot of square footage up there, a lot of angles to keep clean, and no good place to cut a corner. Our crew stripped Emmanuel Church down to the bare deck, checked what was underneath, and laid down a full new roof of GAF Timberline HDZ in Weathered Wood.

The drone shots at the end are our favorite part. That warm, classic color sitting over the whole building, and a congregation that does not have to think about the roof again for a very long time.

Roofs like this one do not announce that they are failing. They just get quietly worse until a storm forces the issue. When was the last time anybody actually looked at yours?

Transformation Tuesday, and this one meant a lot to us. We had the honor of putting a brand new roof on Emmanuel Church right here in Salisbury.

The old roof had run its course, so our crew tore it off and installed a fresh set of GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in Weathered Wood. A warm, classic color that really suits a building this important to the community.

We have been blessed to work on quite a few churches over the years, so a project like this feels right at home for us. There is something extra meaningful about protecting a place where so many families gather every week.
