FAQ Friday: What is tapered insulation?

This one is for the commercial building owners, and it is a good one to know. A flat roof should not actually be flat. If water just sits up there, it finds a way in.

Tapered insulation is rigid insulation board that we cut and lay at a slight slope, usually about a quarter inch per foot. That built-in slope steers rain water toward the drains instead of letting it pool in the middle of the roof.

Why it matters: standing water, what we call ponding, is one of the hardest things on a flat roof. It breaks down the membrane over time, adds weight and stress to the structure, finds every weak seam, and a lot of manufacturer warranties will not cover a roof that ponds.

When we did the commercial TPO on Homer Street, the drainage layout was a big part of doing it right. A flat roof that moves water to the drains like it should is a flat roof doing its job.

This Salisbury, MD roof replacement was a special one because we had the chance to help one of our friends. 🏠

We installed GAF Timberline HDZ Charcoal shingles on the pitched roof sections and a new TPO roofing system on the flat roof section.

Not every roof section needs the same material. Shingles work on sloped areas, while flat sections need systems like TPO to help with waterproofing and long term protection.

🏠 Roof of the Week: Two Roofing Systems, One Home

This week’s featured roof is right here in Salisbury, MD, and it is a great example of why not every roof can be treated the same way.

For the sloped portions of the home, we installed new GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in Charcoal. The flat section needed something completely different, so our crew installed a new TPO membrane roofing system.

The drone view really shows how the two systems come together.

This project was also a little more special for us because we had the privilege of completing it for one of our friends. There is something pretty rewarding about being trusted to take care of the homes of the people close to us. 💛

Not every roofer works with both shingle and membrane roofing systems. Having experience with both allows us to use the right material for each part of the roof instead of trying to make one system work everywhere.

FAQ Friday: What is a wind uplift rating, and why does it matter on the Eastern Shore?

Here is the plain answer. A wind uplift rating is the wind speed a shingle system is tested and rated to handle, often somewhere around 110 to 130 mph. It tells you how much wind those shingles are built to take.

Why does it matter so much here? Because we live near the coast. Ocean City, Bethany, and the whole Shore see nor'easters and high wind that most inland places never deal with. The rating counts for more out here.

But here is the honest catch. You only actually get that rated performance if the install is done right. That means the correct number of nails, usually 6 per shingle, a proper starter strip along the edges, and shingles that seal down the way they should. A rushed, cheap install can turn a high-rated shingle into one that blows off in the first big storm.

Starting the morning off with another roof replacement right here in Salisbury, MD. 🏠

This house is a little different because it has a mix of roofing systems. Part of the home has a traditional shingle roof, while another section has a flat roof that calls for a TPO membrane system.

That is one thing we run into pretty often. Not every roof is built the same, and sometimes one property needs more than one type of roofing material to get everything done properly.

Something else we thought was pretty cool? This house is right beside another home that G and Bros has already worked on. It is always nice coming back to a neighborhood where we have been before.

🏠 Not every roof is a shingle roof.

This homeowner had a flat section that needed a better long-term roofing solution, so our crew removed the existing aluminum roofing and built out a new TPO membrane roofing system.

TPO is commonly used on flat and low-slope roofs because it creates a continuous waterproof membrane instead of relying on overlapping shingles.

And this type of work is not limited to houses either. We install membrane roofing systems on residential properties, commercial buildings, apartment buildings, condos, and other low-slope roofs throughout the Eastern Shore.

🎉 A little late, but we couldn’t skip this one!
