This article hits personally as I had an “adult” speak to me this way yesterday. Sorry in advance for the profanity in the article but I think this man was thinking how I’m feeling.
Long story short, the potential customer called Wednesday and I had not called him back within 24 hours due to having an extremely busy day. When he called back after the 24 hour period, I could definitely tell he had a chip on his shoulder as he informed me my “window was closing in.” I very kindly told him that we may not be able to meet his timeframe due to our current commitments.”He gruffly said, “just get me an estimate that’s all I want.” I then made the executive decision to say I really didnt think that we were going to be able to help him but before he hung up, he said “well how about this? Fu$k You,” and slammed the phone down. I sat there for a minute and thought, I know this grown man did not just say this to me. In over 30 years of business, I’ve never had someone do that. So I pick up the phone and called him back and you guessed it, he didn’t answer, but I left him a nice message and asked him if there was something going on in his life that justified or made him feel the need to speak to me that way …. and that if he was married and spoke to his wife with the same words and tone, I really felt sorry for her. I ended with, I think I made the right choice by declining to even give you the estimate.
We have too many wonderful, patient and gracious customers for me to give one more minute of attention in my mind to this person cause it really bothered me, but…I’m over it!
People….it doesn’t matter if you’re a kid or an adult. Think about what you’re saying to someone. Treat people the way you want to be treated. At the end of the day, I had to remind myself it was a reflection of him, not me. Don’t be these people or that man.
