As we are coming out of winter, we have noticed there were an unprecedented number of fuel tank leaks this season. We are not the only company to be dealing with this and our friends in the industry have reported the same.
This is in part due to the biofuels in heating oil. These biofuels produce a byproduct that acts as a cleaning agent, which can accelerate existing leaks in old tanks. Traditional heating oil produces a sludge that, in effect, blocked holes in the tank. With this new, cleaner fuel, it cleans out the sludge, which exposes the holes.
As we are winding down our heating season, we will be making recommendations to customers who have tanks that may start leaking to proactively replace them before the next heating season. As many of you know, oil tank leaks can result in serious environmental or financial consequences. If we believe your tank should be replaced, we will send you an email or letter. If you are unsure whether we should replace your tank, please call the office 518-854-7227 and we will set up an inspection. If you have any questions about a new fuel tank, or anything else, we will be happy to help!
