Derby Square Architects

Derby Square Architects Derby Square Architects is a practice of architects & interior designers who work collaboratively to design buildings for the betterment of our community.

Originally founded as Richard Griffin Architects (RGA) in 1998 on Turner Street in Salem, Richard began offering architectural consulting services for local residences and small businesses. Richard had previously worked for other local architects such as HMFH and D.F. Trees Associates. In 2013 Bill and Alexandra Peterson launched Kontseptual, Inc., an architecture and interior planning practice in

Boston, MA. They began consulting with Richard and Craig in 2014 and eventually moved up to Salem and into a shared office in Derby Square. Today this collection of architects and interior designer has formed Derby Square Architects.

This church renovation thoughtfully balances preservation with modern-day needs, introducing accessible connections between both floors, a LULA elevator, refreshed gathering spaces, and carefully integrated updates throughout. The result is a building that’s ready for its next chapter, while keeping the character that made it special in the first thing place.

We worked with the owners of the Howling Wolf of Salem, MA and the Wolf Express of Marblehead, MA to create their third location in North Andover, near Merrimack College. The space was previously used as a frozen yogurt shop and called for an overhaul of most of the space. At the same time, to work within the clients budget we found ways to reuse key finishes like floor tile, ceiling grid, and essential plumbing locations. The result is a dynamic space for take-out, eat-in, and a full-service bar.

We're often so busy with our work as architects, it's easy to put off something like headshots for our talented team of designers. But we recently made time and worked with to help showcase our team and the great work they do. Thanks, Pat!

Should be another fun Salem’s So Sweet! We are excited all the creative sculptures!

The ice sculpture map is officially here!

Everything in red (1 through 11) gets installed in time for the Friday night illumination, everything in purple (12 through 27) gets installed on Saturday morning. All sculptures are illuminated on Saturday night!

Worried about accessibility?
The Salem Trolley will again be shuttling folks on a loop around town on Sat. Feb. 7 and Sun. Feb. 8 from 12 to 4 pm, $3. They won't be able to get to every sculpture, but you'll get to see plenty PLUS a trolley tour of the downtown!

How long to the sculptures stay up?
Until they melt! Really, not (just) being sassy about it. In warm/wet weather, they may start melting immediately. In cool/dry weather, they can last weeks!

But how much is it to see the sculptures?
Viewing the ice sculptures is always FREE! But we still have tickets available for our Salem's So Sweet Kickoff Event on Friday!
