Your roof needs to breathe, too. 🏠
When we inspect a roof, we look beyond the shingles. Proper attic ventilation helps move hot, moist air out of your attic and can help protect your home and roofing materials through every season.
Here’s how the main parts work:
• Intake vents—often located in the soffits or along the lower roof edge—let cooler, fresh air enter the attic.
• Ridge vents run along the peak of the roof and allow warm, moist air to escape along the roof’s highest point.
• RVO box vents are individual vents installed through the roof. Like ridge vents, they let warm, moist air escape, but they work at separate locations on the roof.
In summer, good airflow can help reduce trapped heat and ease the load on your cooling system. Year-round, it helps manage moisture that can contribute to mildew, wood rot, and damaged roof decking. In winter, balanced ventilation can help reduce the temperature differences that contribute to ice dams. Proper ventilation can also help protect shingles from excess heat and moisture.
The right setup depends on your roof and attic. Intake vents need to work with the exhaust system, and the type and placement of vents matter. Our team can take a look and explain what we find.
