Thinking about going to a tankless water heater? Here are a few things to consider!

Pros of Tankless:
1) The lifespan of a quality gas tankless water heater is 20 years! A tank-type nowadays is 10 years.
2) Endless hot water
3) Some models have a built in recirculation pump that delivers hot water almost instantly
4) Easily serviceable and replaceable
5) Can be installed in tight spaces
6) Can be installed indoors or outdoors

Cons of Tankless:
1) Must have a gas source. While electric tankless water heaters exist- most plumbing contractors have not found them to be reliable. If you’re in Salado- this means that you must have propane available.
2)Recommended to be flushed annually- you can do this yourself or hire a professional
3) As with a tank-type water heater, a water softening system is strongly encouraged
4) Tankless water heaters are more expensive than a tank type heater.

While it seems like we are over the cold weather for now, we still have a few more months of winter!
We recommend the following tips for leak prevention during freezing temperatures:

1) Insulate all outside hose bibs with covers. If you cannot get any- you can also use towels and duct tape.
2) Open up cabinet doors to allow heat to flow to your pipes
3) Drip Cold AND Hot water! The water in your hot lines are still prone to freezing!
4) Know where your water shutoff is located. There may be a valve at your water softener, water meter, or well house. If you do not have a water shutoff- we would be happy to install one that is easily accessible.
5) Keep an eye out for leaks after it warms up. Many leaks are detected after the water lines thaw out.

PSA: High Water Pressure

At Salado Plumbing, we have been discovering many areas in Salado are experiencing higher than recommended water pressure.

While having more water pressure may sound desirable, dangerously high water pressure can cause serious damage to your home’s plumbing system.

The Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) requires a Pressure Regulator to be installed when the water pressure is above 80 PSI. A pressure regulator is installed on the incoming water service line and brings the water pressure down to a safe level.

In Salado, we have seen water pressures over 120 PSI. This causes additional wear and tear on your water distribution piping, with older homes being most susceptible due to aged copper piping. High pressure can also damage your water softener, resulting in clogging up fixtures with the softener’s membranes.

If your neighbors have high pressure, chances are that you do as well. A simple guage, like the one below, can be purchased from Ace Hardware so you can check your own water pressure.

Give us a call at Salado Plumbing if you are experiencing high water pressure.
