Moonstone Design & Build Woman-owned and family-run residential design, construction, and real estate studio

My name is Lidia Valdivia- I’m the President and Founder of Moonstone Design + Build. I love transformation stories, which is what drives my passion for home remodeling in the Twin Cities. Nothing brings me more satisfaction than listening to a client’s vision, working together to create an imaginative, fresh design, and then leading my amazing team to create the space. As a woman-owned business in a male-dominated industry, I bring a unique perspective to home renovation projects. When you work with Moonstone Design + Build, you can expect clear communication, thoughtful input, defined project expectations, and reliable follow-through. I love going to work every day and look forward to hearing about your dream space!

We’re having a little too much fun with the laundry room at Colonial Revival ✨

It’s a hardworking space, so we wanted to give it everything it needs to actually function well, but we also didn’t want that to mean playing it safe. The plum cabinetry, patterned floor, dark stone, brass + wallpaper all bring a lot of personality into a room that could have easily been treated as purely practical.

And honestly, those are some of my favorite spaces to design, because the rooms you use constantly deserve to feel good too.

If you were designing your own laundry room, what would you care about most:
✻ Storage
✻ Counter space
✻ A place to hang + fold

Sculptural MCM is finished, and this one was always about knowing when to add and when to leave well enough alone.

The house already had a strong architectural point of view, so the goal was never to make it feel new. It was to make the updates feel like they had always belonged here.

We leaned into what the home was already giving us: rich wood, long sightlines, incredible natural light, a strong connection to the outdoors, and the kind of mid-century proportions that do not need much explaining. From there, we added what the house needed now.

Custom wood cabinetry. A layered green tile backsplash. Sculptural lighting. Quiet stone. Better function. More storage. And, importantly, more room to gather.

What we love most is that nothing feels overly “designed.” The materials, art, light + existing character all have room to speak.

Welcome to Sculptural MCM 🌙

I remember the first time a contractor asked me to pick tile for a bathroom.

I was just a subcontractor working on someone else’s flip. The budget was so low, and of course I fell in love with tile that was more expensive than what we had.

So I paid the difference out of my own pocket because I just wanted that bathroom to be more beautiful.

Story of my life. 😂

Fast forward a few years and now I get to work with clients who genuinely appreciate handmade materials, beautiful craftsmanship, and all the little details I obsess over.

And brands like Mercury Mosaics , Clay Imports LIVDEN | Modern, Sustainable Tile & Wallpaper , Castelli Marble , Architessa and Cemento Collection collaborate with us and be part of the homes we’re creating.

Sometimes I think about that little bathroom and how much has changed.

I still get ridiculously excited about tile. I still fall in love with things that are probably over budget. And I still care just as much about making something beautiful. ❤️

A site visit is where design intent gets tested against the realities of the home.

We’re reviewing dimensions, proportions, installation details + site conditions while working through decisions with the trades. It’s where small questions get resolved before they become larger ones, and where the details that make a project feel cohesive are protected through construction.

For us, that connection between design + build is essential.

Being included in VIE Magazine’s Art + Design Issue feels especially meaningful.

This feature tells a fuller version of the Moonstone story, from my beginnings in construction to the way Nicaragua, travel, old homes, color, art + craftsmanship continue to shape how I think about design today.

At the center of it is something I come back to often: “I would rather you recognize the person who lives in the house before you recognize the designer who created it.”

For me, the best homes are not the ones that follow every rule. They are the ones that feel layered, personal, a little unexpected, and deeply connected to the people who live there.

Thank you to VIE Magazine - A Media Company for giving so much space to the story behind the work and for telling it beautifully. 🌙

Demo Day is one of the biggest milestones in a remodel. It’s the moment the planning starts becoming real, and sometimes the moment we learn a little more about the house than we knew before.

From preparing the space to navigating unforeseens, here’s what actually happens when construction begins.

Planning a remodel? Save this for later or inquire at the link in bio 🌙
