None of these trees on our property have ever suffered storm damage, can you guess why?

This African Sumac had prior storm damage, we gave it a reduction pruning to mitigate further damage. About a month later, we get a call that the tree fell over. We came to find a huge pocket of rotting wood within the stem. The heart wood is gone.

As we were grinding out the stump, we came across three irrigation emitters that were embedded within the trunk and still delivering water. The tree grew around them and contained them within for the last decade or more.

We always stress how vital it is to MOVE your watering zone and your drip emitters as the tree matures. This is a major reason for that. This tree seemed otherwise healthy, despite a poor structure. We were working on that. We didn’t even suspect rot to be present, until the entire tree failed.

Now, we removed it entirely and replaced it with a Willow Acacia. Using the old trunk grinding as mulch for the new tree. We also installed a small area sprinkler and basin to retain water. No more drip tubing getting embedded. Entire drip zones and beyond are now getting watered evenly every application.

Start the young tree out correctly, and all this headache could have been avoided.

A long day of moving lots of mulch and dirt. We added several inches to this future planting site, built berms and swales, leveled out some places, then mulched the whole thing.

We anticipate about thirty trees going into this side yard, accompanied by a row of dense jujube and pomegranate all along the border. Can’t wait for planting season!

Do you or someone you love have an absolute monster of a tree in the yard?

Today, we began a healthcare regimen for this colossal Palo Verde. We begin by addressing (past) and future storm damage. This tree’s canopy has been raised year after year by careless pruners and the effects of that practice are beginning to rear their head. Massive branch breaks and failures are happening more and more frequently.

Today, we provided this tree an entire canopy reduction, removing thousands of pounds of weight. This large load of weight being concentrated at the ends of branches + strong wind = disaster waiting to happen.

This process is NOT a “one and done” fix. We will be returning yearly to semi-annually to continue the process of reducing the upper canopy, while nurturing the new sprouts that can finally be allowed to fill in the middle and lower portions of the tree.

We also installed two braces on a couple competing leaders that have become badly included. These bad branch unions are (often) ultimately what end up breaking off in a wind storm. As the leaders compete for viable space, they grow against one-another until whichever is more poorly attached, fails. When this happens, especially on a tree of this scale, the repercussions can be catastrophic.

What is going on here!?

Once we get berms installed around these vertical drains, we will have a passive rain water capture system that also distributes water laterally, right to the root zone (2-4) feet below the surrounding area. As water gathers above, these drains allow for a more evenly distribution of percolating water. This will aid with compaction from caliche and clay, while also keeping more rainwater in a very localized microclimate.

These are different from watering stakes as this system is gravity fed, not pressurized. It is slow released to gradually soak to a ~3 ft depth. It will not erode your soil, and doesn’t require a hose.

By strategically placing these chimney systems to work alongside our integrated irrigation schedule, we can drastically prolong the efficacy of water used.

Happy Monday! Just wanted to put it out there that we are hiring for a tree climber. We work 4-10s, no Fridays or weekends for the crew unless you want the extra hours. We help people get certified. Big project update! Irrigation lines are in and trenched and ready to start flooding. We still have emitters to place, drains, chimneys and a few berms for retention. This area should be done by the end of this week! We will then mulch the entire area and wait for the end of summer to begin the planting frenzy!

This is incredible, watching the progress that this HOA has made to their community just with intentional, and thoughtful stewardship of the available land and plants. The cost savings from ditching the constant landscaping, are astronomical, and the quality of work has improved.
