Why the Lowest Remodeling Estimate Is Not Always the Lowest Cost
When comparing remodeling estimates, the lowest number is not always the least expensive choice.
Two proposals can look similar at first glance while including very different levels of work, materials, preparation, and project management.
Before choosing a contractor, ask:
β’ Does the estimate clearly describe the work being completed? β’ Are materials and allowances identified? β’ Are permits and inspections included? β’ Does the proposal include demolition and debris removal? β’ Who will protect the floors and surrounding areas? β’ How will unexpected conditions be handled? β’ How are changes documented and approved? β’ What cleanup is included?
A vague estimate may leave room for unexpected expenses later. A detailed proposal helps homeowners understand where their money is going and makes it easier to compare contractors fairly.
