An ever-changing landscape, designed to be discovered.

Follow the winding paths through a hillside woodland where Spanish bluebells give way to autumn begonias, creating year-round beauty at every turn.

Shade tolerant understory: Trees, shrubs, and groundcover were selected to provide year round interest and habitat.

On our first site visit, we were greeted by a stand of mature maples, and it was immediately clear this would be a special project. Alongside the outdoor kitchen and pool, we developed a setting that forms a striking backdrop to the poolscape and paving, subtly drawing movement through the woodland towards a marble water feature beyond. With carefully considered woodland planting, the space was gently transformed.

Working in dialogue with such established natural beauty is one of the privileges of this profession. The trees were illuminated using discreet, carefully concealed light sources that accentuate the lower structure of the trunks without spilling glare into the canopy above. This approach preserves their natural character while allowing their form to emerge after dark.

The result is a landscape that feels equally inviting by night and by day, with lighting adding a further layer of depth and revealing the setting in a completely different way after dusk.

These are just some of the design options we explored for our client in Ludlow, NY, helping them weigh possibilities and shape a landscape that truly fits their lifestyle.

As this project in Garrison, NY continues to evolve, we’re studying how light and shadow will animate the landscape throughout the year.

The elongated reflection pool and wraparound pergola establish a strong architectural framework, while seasonal shifts in the sun create an ever-changing pattern of shade across the site. We’re exploring how canopy structure, understory planting, and the pergola itself will shape distinct spatial experiences from spring through winter.

Our design approach is not just for form and function, but also for the passage of time, allowing the landscape to reveal itself differently with each season.

From barefoot walks beneath the trees to cooling off in the curved serpentine pool, this garden was designed for slow summer living. DEA designed bespoke ironwork hoops to support climbing roses, creating soft transitions between the perennial garden and poolside while framing glimpses through layered planting to the outdoor kitchen beyond.

City Wilding: On a New York terrace, planting becomes an act of soft reclamation. Salvia, Achillea and Astrantia, amongst others, are woven with ornamental grasses to form a layered tapestry of texture and movement, shifting with wind and light across the seasons.

Benefitting both people and pollinators, the planting offers nectar-rich habitat for bees and butterflies, turning a high-rise setting into a small but meaningful urban ecosystem.
