Iceland has achieved 30% electric vehicle market share in a country where most electricity is geothermal — making it the first nation where EVs are powered primarily by heat from the Earth rather than from the sun or wind, and where charging is so cheap that Icelanders describe it as essentially free.
Iceland's electricity is produced almost entirely from geothermal and hydropower at a cost of approximately €0.05 to €0.08 per kilowatt-hour — among the cheapest in Europe. Charging an electric vehicle in Iceland costs a fraction of what it costs anywhere else in the developed world. An Icelandic EV driver charging at home pays approximately $1.50 for a full charge — less than 1% of equivalent petrol cost. At these economics, the payback calculation for EV adoption takes months rather than years.
Charging infrastructure density in Iceland is extraordinary for a country of 370,000 people. The Ring Road — Route 1 — circling the entire island has rapid chargers every 50 kilometers, allowing full circumnavigation without range anxiety. Reykjavik's geothermal-heated car parks include heated charging bays that prevent battery temperature loss in winter — combining Iceland's unique district heating infrastructure with EV charging in a facility type that exists nowhere else on Earth.
Landsbankinn — Iceland's largest bank — offers EV loans at 0% interest for the first year in partnership with the government, making EV adoption accessible across income levels. The combination of near-free electricity, government financing support, and dense charging infrastructure has driven Iceland's EV adoption faster than any other per-capita measure in the world.
Iceland's EVs run on volcanoes. The driving cost is closer to zero than any other country on Earth.
