Here's how this one works.

How do you take design tips from a guy in a funny hat?

I've been doing this for 25 years. I've designed furniture and cabinets, built custom furniture and custom cabinets, and designed kitchens for about 10 years. Am I the guy to give you fashion advice? Probably not. Cabinet advice, yes.

It's a Boston Scally cap, and I own about half a dozen. Thanks to everyone who has had something to say about them.

Which white goes with walnut?

I'm not a big fan of stark whites. But with a dark wood and a grain this active, I actually like one.

If you want to go warmer, Milk Glass from Omega is a good off-white next to walnut. Beach House is a little warmer than a stark white too. Lighter grays work with walnut as well.

Put two whites side by side and you can see the difference right away. Stop by our Rowley showroom and we'll pull the samples out so you can compare them yourself.

Every family has one. The kitchen where everyone ends up, no matter how many other rooms are in the house.

With the holidays getting closer, we keep picturing everything this Topsfield kitchen will see. Coffee at the island the morning after. Kids sneaking cookies off the counter. The last few people still talking long after the dishes are done.

Some small details make those days easier. The microwave sits in a drawer in the island, so the counters stay clear. The outlet on the end of the island is right where a slow cooker or warming tray goes.

We're so happy for this family, and we hope their first holiday in this kitchen is a great one.

Three decisions that shape a bathroom vanity, from this Newbury, MA project:

1. Drawers or doors. Drawers win for most daily items because you can see everything without kneeling down to dig. This vanity has drawers on both sides of the sink and saves the door for the space under the plumbing.
2. Where the tall storage goes. A tower between the counters adds a lot of storage without taking up floor space. It also breaks up the run, so the room doesn't feel like one long wall of cabinets.
3. Match your metals. Chrome faucet, chrome light, chrome k***s and pulls. When the metals line up, the room looks planned.

It can take a few layouts to get a bathroom right, and that's normal. Our team will walk through the design with you at our Rowley showroom.

For this Newburyport homeowner, the answer to all three was yes. She already had a finish she loved on a mudroom unit we built for her, so we're matching the kitchen to that same color.

Cabinets are not just a kitchen thing.

Three rooms in the same North Andover home, three different looks, one plan behind all of them.

The master bath went stained wood with a marble top and brass, warm enough to stand up to that wallpaper instead of fighting it. The second vanity went deep green with a shaped marble backsplash and a wall-mount faucet, which keeps the whole counter open. The bedroom wall is a built-in: four tall doors and eight drawers doing the job a dresser used to do, without taking a foot of floor space.

Drawers under a sink are the part people underestimate. The plumbing runs straight through where the box wants to be, so every one has to be planned around it. Worth the trouble. You end up reaching into a drawer instead of crouching into a dark cabinet.

Before we picked a single color, we moved the kitchen.

This Andover project started with a layout that was fighting the people using it. The cooktop sat in the island under a big stainless hood. The fridge was in the wrong corner. A window was taking up wall we needed.

So the range moved to the wall, the fridge moved, the window closed in, and a door shifted over. That is what made room for the long island with real seating, the farmhouse sink under the window, and storage that actually holds what this family owns, right down to the open shelves on the end of the island.

Painted cabinetry, quartz counters, copper overhead. Same footprint, completely different kitchen.

The best parts of a kitchen are usually the ones you never see.

See all hidden kitchen details. A refrigerator wearing custom panels so it reads as furniture instead of an appliance. A trash pull-out hiding behind a door that matches every other door in the run. An oven built into a tall cabinet so the counter next to it stays open for actual work.

None of this happens by accident. It gets decided early, on paper, while the layout is still moving. Waiting until the cabinets are ordered is how people end up with a trash can next to the fridge.
