Friends
This had been a brutal summer for us and our landscape plants and lawns
These rains we have had are a tiny bit of relief
But know it takes and inch to two inches per week to help plants recover from this drought and extreme heat
Heat sensitive plants like hemlocks, pieris, rhododendrons, and dogwoods and even redbuds
Need consistent moist soil and sufficient mulch to keep them moist and roots cooler
Any of the plants mentioned above respond well to a few bags of Ice cubes slowly melting near the root zone. This helps cool soil temps down and helps plant respond to heat better.
Also be very cautious with water
Follow regulations which allow watering only from 4pm till 10 am any day with sprinklers
With a hose that has a shut off you can water any time
But mid day watering has little effect since it evaporates
Also be sure your sprinkler system has a rain shut off gauge
Nothing worse than sprinklers going on while it rains.
Keep up the good work
