Let’s talk about car show etiquette. Apparently, “look but don’t touch” needs a little refresher. 😂
After I shared the video of an older gentleman opening the hood on my Chevelle, I was surprised by how many people thought I was being insensitive. Some of the comments:
“If you don’t like it, don’t go to car shows.”
“It’s not like he hurt anything.”
“He just wanted to reminisce.”
“The car is a piece of junk anyway.”
So if you don’t like someone’s car, that makes it OK to start going through it? Man, tough crowd! 😂
What I didn’t show was that he also opened my doors and rolled my windows up and down before opening the hood. He was giving that Chevelle a more thorough inspection than I did when I bought it!
My GoPro was running while I was walking around getting content for my YouTube channel. Coming back, I spotted him reaching for the hood latch. I thought, “No way. He’s not going to…” Yup. He did. Then he started telling other people about my car like he was giving the grand tour.
And yes, I DID talk to him. When he asked if it was my car, I told him, “I thought it was yours since you were going through it so thoroughly.” 😂
He explained that he thought it might have been his mom’s old car. Hers was green, and he wanted to look under the hood for signs of the original color. Mine was originally green, too, but I have the paperwork showing it belonged to a lady in Georgia. I explained that I appreciated the connection, but he still needed to ask before going through someone else’s car.
Some also asked why my hood wasn’t already open. There’s nothing under there I’m ready to show off yet! Anyone who knows me knows I take pride in how my engines look. Both of my ’72 Chevelles had great-looking engines, and my Malibu wagon even won a best-looking engine award. This one is still a work in progress.
For a lot of us, car shows are where we go to relax, catch up with friends, and show off something we’ve put time, money, and hard work into. Whether it’s a trophy winner or a project still coming together, please respect it.
Ask about the car. Ask for a picture. Ask to see the engine. Heck, get me talking about my cars and your biggest problem will be getting me to shut up! 😂
But opening doors, working the windows, lifting the hood, or climbing inside? Always ask the owner first.
We’re happy to share the stories and memories. Just let us be the ones to pop the hood. 👍
