Families ask about staffing, meals, and room layouts when they choose a care facility. Fewer ask how the facility protects the information on its computers, even though a parent's records, medications, and contact details are kept there.

You don't need technical vocabulary to ask. Try: "How do you protect resident information on your staff computers, and who is responsible for keeping that up to date?" A facility that has a plain answer has usually thought about it.

We work with nursing homes on the browser-level part of that answer, so staff can use the systems they already rely on with protection built in. Families shouldn't have to wonder about it.

A browser can't make a facility HIPAA compliant. It can reduce how much sensitive information is exposed on staff workstations, and that is the part we work on.

We deploy and manage Chrome Enterprise Core, with centralized management through the Google Admin console and protection against known phishing and malware sites. It supports the technical safeguards a facility already has to maintain. Policies, staff training, access reviews, and risk assessments are still yours to run.

When a vendor says its product "handles HIPAA," ask which safeguard it covers and which ones it leaves to you. A clear answer to that question is more useful than a certificate.

Not every scam starts with a phone call. Some start with a web page: a full-screen warning, sometimes with an alarm sound, saying the computer has a virus and to call a support number right away. The number goes to the scammer, who then asks for remote access or payment.

We set up the browser residents use with Google's Safe Browsing protection turned on, which warns before opening many known phishing and malware sites. It won't catch every new scam page, so one rule is worth passing along to a parent too: according to the FTC, real security warnings never ask you to call a phone number.

If a parent has ever called you about a scary message on their screen, that's a good time to check what protection their browser has.

Scam calls aimed at older adults don't look like scams anymore. Caller ID can be spoofed to show a real bank's name, and the script sounds official enough to create urgency before anyone has time to think it through.

So.Dependable sets up residents' phones with call screening and known-scammer blocking turned on from the start, so the calls that get through are more likely to actually be family.

No setup catches everything. But cutting down how often a resident has to make that judgment call alone is worth doing on its own.

If a loved one's phone doesn't have call screening turned on, that's a five-minute fix.

Break-fix IT support looks cheap until the month a server goes down, a device needs replacing, and three support calls land at once. Facilities budget for IT every year and then blow past it anyway.

So.Dependable runs on a flat monthly rate that covers device management, support calls, and patching — the same cost whether it's a quiet month or a rough one.

If your IT spending swings more than your census does, that's worth a second look.

Not every visit is possible — work, distance, a bad week. When you can't be there in person, a video call that actually connects on the first try matters more than it sounds like it should.

So.Dependable keeps residents' devices set up and working, so a call to a parent or grandparent doesn't turn into a troubleshooting session first.

If the last video call took longer to set up than the conversation itself, that's a fixable problem.

Moving a parent into senior living already means a long list — paperwork, packing, adjusting to a new routine. Figuring out how to get them set up on a tablet so they can call you shouldn't be one more thing on that list.

So.Dependable sets up new residents' devices before move-in day: logins ready, family contacts saved, the basics working from day one.

If your facility's move-in process doesn't include this yet, it's worth asking about.

A forgotten password shouldn't turn into a lost evening. For a lot of families, it does anyway — a phone call, a screen share, twenty minutes hunting for a reset link that already expired.

So.Dependable sets up senior residents' devices with logins built for the person actually using them, not the assumption that everyone remembers eight characters with three symbols.

If tech support is currently a family member on call every night, it doesn't have to stay that way.
