The FIU Bridge Collapse: Critical Lessons in Engineering, Ethics, and Public Safety.

Join Scott S. Buckley, Project Manager with Ghirardelli Associates, for a two-part educational seminar examining the 2018 Florida International University (FIU) pedestrian bridge collapse, which claimed six lives and injured several others.
As an expert witness for the victims and their families, Scott conducted an extensive investigation into the collapse and authored a detailed report examining its causes, contributing factors, and the decisions that led to the tragedy.

The presentation will explore engineering design and review, contract requirements, construction oversight, risk recognition, communication failures, professional responsibility, and the warning signs that can help prevent future failures.

🚧 Project Update: Big Equipment and Big Progress at Bickford Ranch! 🚧

GBI is currently working on LDR-21A and 21B, an area that will include more than 400 homes as part of the larger 2,000-home Bickford Project.

The site is seeing plenty of action, with crews moving roughly 14,000 yards of dirt each day using up to nine CAT scrapers, multiple CAT D8, D10, and D11 dozers, and a Komatsu 475 dozer, one of the largest dozers in California.

With completed villages already home to residents and more areas continuing to take shape, progress at Bickford is moving full speed ahead! 👷‍♂️🏘️🚜

🏃‍♀️Miles, Smiles & Community Spirit!🏃‍♂️

For the past few years, Ghirardelli has been proud to support the Humboldt Bay Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K as the Title Sponsor, and on August 9, we were back for another fantastic day of running, cheering, and connecting with the community!

As part of our annual tradition, our team manned the Ghirardelli booth throughout the event, handing out Gatorade, water, and plenty of Krispy Kreme donuts to help keep runners and spectators refreshed! 💧🍩

And we didn’t just cheer from the sidelines! Royce, Kari, and Kristen took on the Half Marathon, while Raewyn and Vicki laced up for the 5K! 🏃‍♀️👏

A huge thank you to the organizers, volunteers, runners, and everyone who stopped by our booth throughout the day. We had a great time continuing a tradition we look forward to every year and are already looking forward to doing it all again next year! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🎉

🏕️ A Summer Tradition at the CEAC Annual Field Summit! 🏕️

Our team recently attended the County Engineers Association of California (CEAC) 41st Annual Field Summit, held July 29–31 at Camp Tehama in Mill Creek, CA.

Formerly known as the Bedroll Conference, the Field Summit brings together county public works engineers and professionals from across California to exchange ideas, share knowledge, and explore ways to continue improving public services.

This is an event our team looks forward to attending each year, providing a great opportunity to connect with industry colleagues, enjoy the beautiful setting, and participate in meaningful conversations.

On August 5, our team had a great time on the course at the APWA Sacramento Annual Golf Tournament, held at Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Lincoln!

Joining us for the day were Emily Chavez and Sebastian Ascensco from the City of West Sacramento, along with Ghirardelli Associates’ Christopher Heylin and Elizabeth Raynal. 🏌️‍♂️⛳🏌️‍♀️

The tournament supports the APWA Scholarship and Education Endowment Programs, helping invest in the future of the public works profession.

Our Southern California team enjoyed participating in the 36th Annual APWA San Diego & Imperial Counties Chapter - APWA Open as a Hole Sponsor on Friday, July 31, at Coronado Golf Course.

Stationed on Hole #17 overlooking Glorietta Bay, our team welcomed golfers throughout the day with a fun chipping challenge, where participants earned raffle tickets for a chance to win a $100 Golf Mart gift certificate. 🚧 Project Update: Caltrans District 2 - State Route 70 Cromberg Project 🚧

Construction continues to make steady progress on the State Route 70 Cromberg Project!

Crews have completed nearly all drainage crossings, are advancing roadway reconstruction and full-depth recycling operations, and continue paving, slope stabilization, and other roadway improvements.

Spanning more than 20 miles along State Route 70, this project will enhance safety and improve travel throughout the corridor. Ghirardelli is proud to provide construction management, materials testing, and inspection services in support of this important Caltrans District 2 project.

A big thank you to our team out there, Gary Lambeth, Jeff McKeehan, Michael Flashner, David Greene, and Riley Melvin for their continued dedication and hard work in helping keep this important project moving forward safely. 👏🚧
