In 2026, Oakland fined a property owner $915,135 for removing 38 protected trees without permits. It was the largest tree penalty in the city's history.
That's an extreme case, but fines across California commonly run from $1,000 to $30,000 per tree, and that's before replacement requirements or civil liability for shared or neighboring trees.
"It's my property" doesn't override local protections. Neither does "it was already dead." A two-minute permit check before any removal can save a lot of trouble later.
Our latest blog walks through what triggers a penalty, what to do if you've already cut, and which trees you can remove freely.
