Clogged gutters don't stay a gutter problem.

Right now the leaves are coming down and filling up gutters all over southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Most people figure they'll get to it. Then the weather turns, and here's what that turns into.

Water that can't drain sits in the gutter and freezes. That ice backs up under the shingles at the edge of the roof, where it melts, refreezes, and works its way into the decking. That's an ice dam. From there it's rotted fascia, stained ceilings, and in a lot of the homes we see, water running down the inside of an exterior wall into the basement.

The gutter was a $300 problem in October. By March it's a roof, a soffit, and a drywall problem.

Two ways to stay ahead of it. Get them cleaned out before the first freeze, every single year, without fail. Or put gutter protection on and stop thinking about it. We install both, and we'll tell you honestly which one makes sense for your house — if your gutters are in rough shape or pitched wrong, covering them up doesn't fix anything, and we'll say so.

It's raining right now — which makes this the best and worst time to learn something about your roof.

While it's coming down, do a quick walk-through:

💧 Water stains spreading on a ceiling
💧 Drips around the chimney, skylights, or attic
💧 Water running behind the gutters instead of into them
💧 A musty smell upstairs that wasn't there before

The first hard freeze in southern Wisconsin is usually a few weeks out. Whatever is wrong with your roof right now gets worse the day it hits.

Lifted shingles let water under the edge. Clogged gutters hold that water. When it freezes, it pushes up under the roofline and you get an ice dam and a wet ceiling in January.

The fix is simple in September. It is expensive in January.

XL Contracting will come out, look over your roof and gutters for free, and show you photos of what we find. If it's fine, we'll tell you it's fine.
