A brewery isn’t an ordinary restaurant with b**r on tap. It’s a working production facility that also happens to be where people want to sit down and enjoy. That combination builds a unique set of MEP challenges.

Neville Engineering approached this challenge while working with Noon Whistle Brewing in Naperville, designing the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems needed to support both sides of that equation.

Brewing and distilling equipment comes with significant technical demands, from robust ventilation systems and high-volume plumbing to substantial electrical requirements. Balancing these heavy industrial necessities while maintaining a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere for guests is the core challenge.

Getting that balance right means the systems behind the walls have to work as hard as the ones on display. Our design helped create a space that works for brewers and b**r lovers alike, functional where it needs to be, and welcoming everywhere else.

We take on projects like this because we understand that good MEP design isn't just about meeting a spec. It's about supporting how a space actually gets used, day in and day out.

Every project schedule has a completion date. Not every schedule accounts for how equipment actually gets installed.

Rooftop units need crane access, staging space, and the right weather window. Indoor systems need tight sequencing and space that has to be locked in well before installing day. Skip that planning, and a schedule that looked fine on paper falls apart the moment equipment shows up on site.

At Neville Engineering, we build timelines around installation logistics from the start, not just target dates. We think through how equipment arrives on site, how it gets placed, and what needs to happen beforehand. That solidifies a schedule that holds up under real conditions instead of just looking good in a Gantt chart.

It's tempting to think good engineering means “clever” engineering. More often, it just means clear engineering.

At Neville Engineering, we’ve seen plenty of designs get overcomplicated in the name of innovation, extra complexity that adds cost, adds risk, and adds more that can go wrong down the road. Our approach starts with straightforward, time-tested systems and methodologies. Simplicity is not a lack of ambition. It’s a framework for success starting from day one.

That doesn't mean we avoid innovating when a project actually calls for it. It means we don't reach for complexity just to seem impressive. Every building has different needs, and the right system is the one that fits, not the one that looks the most impressive on paper.

The “E” in MEP stands for electrical, but it involves far more than wires and panels behind the walls.

Electrical systems support a building’s safety, reliability, and long-term performance. That includes arc flash protection, EV charging infrastructure, generator systems, backup power, and code-compliant design.

Some buildings carry more history than people realize. In 1869, The Aurora Silverplate Manufacturing Company started producing silver-plated dishes and tableware that became nationally known. At its peak, the business employed 200 people as one of Aurora’s most prosperous establishments.

The building itself has been through a lot. The original wood frame factory was destroyed by a fire in 1871, leading to a sturdier brick building as a replacement two months later. For years, the factory ran on power from the Stolp Island Millrace. Later, in 1913, the building shifted to electricity, becoming one of the first west of Chicago to fully convert to electric power.

That’s the kind of history we work with on an adaptive reuse project. When Neville Engineering took on this site’s MEP design, we weren’t expected to just design a system for another modern building. We were working within the walls that had already survived fire and made the grand leap from mechanical to electrical power.

Adaptive reuse means integrating modern HVAC and electrical systems without a pre-planned utility space. That means routing conduit and ductwork through existing chases and voids. We work closely with structural engineers to make sure older timber and masonry can actually support new equipment. Unlike new construction, adaptive reuse keeps a building’s character intact while elevating it to today’s modern standards.

We find pride in helping buildings like this one keep moving forward without losing what made them worth saving in the first place.

Most design decisions get worked out through experience and back-and-forth revisions. Here at Neville Engineering, we take it a step further.

Our HVAC design process includes prototype building modeling, testing different equipment setups digitally before anything gets committed to drawings, let alone construction. That means we can see how a system will actually perform before a client commits to it, not after.

This matters the most when projects face challenges such as a budget with minimal wiggle room, or a building’s use making MEP processes more complicated than usual. Instead of guessing what might work, we can actually place a few options side by side and pick one that best fits the building. Not one that just sounds good in a proposal.

It may seem small, but it ends up making a real difference once the project is underway. Neville Engineering understands that good design means reducing guesswork wherever we can.
