Before the excavator moved, the crew found a killdeer nest in the grass — two speckled eggs laid right on the open ground, which is exactly how killdeer nest. No twigs, no tree, just a little scrape in the dirt.

If you disturb a nest like this, the mother might choose to abandon it completely, and those eggs won't survive without her. So moving them was never an option. We circled the nest, set boulders around it as a barrier, and worked around it for the rest of the dig.
And the truth is, it's not even a long-term thing. Killdeer chicks hatch ready to go — they're up and running within a day and leave the nest almost immediately. It's just a short pause on our end, and the whole family moves on safe.

It would've been faster to ignore it. But how a crew treats the small stuff on your property is how they treat the big stuff too. That's how we work on every project.
