👀 There’s something hiding around North Carolina homes with a reputation straight out of a horror movie… 🎬🩸
And the real story might be even stranger than the legend 😳
Dark corners
Old woodpiles 🪵
Underneath patio furniture 🪑
Inside sheds 🏚️
Crawlspaces 🔦
Places that stay quiet long enough for something to move in without being noticed 👀
That’s exactly where one of North Carolina’s most infamous spiders feels right at home 🕷️
Meet the Black Widow 🖤🩸
Few spiders have managed to build a reputation quite like this one
That glossy black body 🖤
Long slender legs 🕷️
And underneath her abdomen…
The unmistakable red hourglass 🔴⏳
It’s a look that has become so recognizable that you’ll find it everywhere from:
Halloween decorations 🎃
haunted houses 👻
horror movies 🎬
comic books 📚
and pop culture around the world 🌎
But the real spider behind all that fear?
She’s surprisingly secretive 👀
🌙 Black Widows spend much of their time tucked away in dark, protected places where their webs won’t be disturbed
And if you’re expecting one of those beautiful circular spiderwebs…
You’re going to be disappointed 😂🕸️
Their webs are messy
Tangled
Irregular
And surprisingly strong 💪🕸️
It might look like chaos to us…
But every strand helps her detect when something has wandered into the wrong place 👀
A fly 🪰
A beetle 🪲
A cricket 🦗
Once something becomes tangled in the web, those vibrations travel through the silk ⚡🕸️
And somewhere nearby…
She knows dinner has arrived 🍽️🕷️
That’s when one of the most famous weapons in the spider world comes into play 🩸
☠️ THE VENOM
Black Widow venom affects the nervous system and a bite can cause severe pain, muscle cramping, sweating, nausea and other symptoms 😳⚠️
They absolutely deserve respect
But the idea that getting bitten automatically means you’re doomed? 💀
That’s where the horror stories starts getting ahead of the clues 🔎
Deaths from Black Widow bites are extremely rare
And these spiders aren’t roaming around looking for people to attack 🕷️❌
Most would much rather stay hidden
Which makes it a little funny that something so secretive became one of the most famous spiders on Earth 🌎😂
But the venom is only PART of what created her reputation…
Because we haven’t talked about that name yet 👀
🕷️ BLACK WIDOW
There’s a reason we call her that…
Female Black Widows have been known to eat her male counterpart after mating 😳💀
Yep…
Sometimes the date ends with dinner 😂🍽️
But despite the legend, it doesn’t happen every time
The female isn’t guaranteed to kill her mate, even though generations of stories have made it sound that way 🕷️
Still…
Once you combine everything together 👀
🖤 A body dressed in black
🩸 A blood-red marking
🌙 A life spent hiding in darkness
☠️ Powerful venom
💀 And a female that MAY eat her mate
It becomes pretty easy to understand how this little spider crawled its way into our nightmares 🎃🕸️
Over time, the Black Widow became more than just a spider
She became a symbol of danger ⚠️
A character in horror 🎬
A Halloween staple 🎃
And one of those creatures we somehow recognize before we ever encounter one in real life 👀
And while porches all across North Carolina are being covered in spiders and webs this month 🎃🕸️
It might be worth taking a look underneath yours…
Because the real thing is one decoration you definitely don’t want to find under your porch 😅🕷️
