🩺🪱 **Worm Wellness Check: Keeping Your Little Wigglers Happy!** 🌱

Even the hardest-working compost crew needs a little wellness check now and then. A quick peek every few days can help prevent big problems before your worms decide to pack their tiny bags and leave.

# # # 📅 How Often Should You Check?

👉 **Quick peek:** every 3–4 days
Lift the lid, take a look, give it a sniff.

👉 **Full checkup:** once a week
Check moisture, food balance, worm activity, and overall bin health.

👉 **Deep refresh:** every 4–6 weeks
Harvest castings, fluff bedding, and give the bin a fresh reset.

---

# # # 🔍 What to Look For

💧 **Moisture**
Your bin should feel like a wrung-out sponge.
Not dry like paper, not swamp goblin territory.

**Too wet?** Add dry cardboard, paper, or leaves.
**Too dry?** Lightly mist with water.

---

👃 **Smell**
Healthy bin = earthy, fresh, like a forest floor 🌲
Problem bin = sour, rotten, ammonia, or “something died in a sock”

**Fix:** Remove old food, reduce feeding, add dry bedding, improve airflow.

---

🥕 **Food Balance**
Good foods: fruit scraps, veggie scraps, coffee grounds, crushed eggshells

Avoid too much: citrus, onions, bread, spicy foods
Never: meat, dairy, oils

**Fix:** Feed smaller amounts and only when the last meal is mostly gone.

---

🪰 **Visitors You Didn’t Invite**
Watch for fruit flies, mites, ants, mold, or lots of tiny white worms.

Usually this means: too much food + too much moisture

**Fix:** Less feeding, more dry bedding, better balance.

---

🏃 **Escape Attempts**
Happy worms stay home.

If they’re climbing the walls or trying to escape, check:
temperature, moisture, airflow, and food conditions.

---

🌡️ **Temperature**
Best range: **55–77°F (13–25°C)**

Too hot or too cold can stress your worms.

**Fix:** Move the bin indoors, garage, basement, or shaded area.

---

🪱 **Worm Health**
Healthy worms are active, plump, and reddish.

If they look pale, thin, sluggish, or seem to vanish like tiny underground spies… something needs adjusting.

---

# # # 🌿 Monthly Refresh

Every 4–6 weeks:

• Harvest some castings
• Add fresh bedding
• Loosen compacted material
• Let the bin breathe

A packed, dense bin becomes worm traffic jail.

---

Happy worms make rich compost, healthy plants, and a greener home 🌍💚

❄️🪱 Winter Tip: Keeping Your Worms Cozy & Safe!
Cold weather is coming, and your red wigglers need a little extra love this season. The good news? Keeping them warm is simple—and makes them happier, calmer, and better composters.
Here’s how to protect your worm bin in winter:

🔥 Keep them warm (but not hot!)
Move your bin indoors or into a sheltered spot like a basement, garage, shed, or even under a covered porch. Anything above 50°F (10°C) keeps them comfy.

🛏️ Add extra bedding
Thick layers of shredded cardboard, leaves, or paper help insulate the bin and keep the environment stable.

🥕 Feed smaller amounts
Worms slow down in winter. Too much food can rot before they eat it—so give light, frequent feedings.

💧 Watch the moisture
Cold slows evaporation, so your bin may get soggy. Add dry bedding if needed to keep it feeling like a wrung-out sponge.

🌡️ Optional: Blanket the bin
A thick towel, old sweater, or even a piece of cardboard placed on top provides extra insulation without trapping too much heat.
Happy worms stay put, work harder, and make that beautiful rich compost all winter long.

Stay warm, little wigglers! ❄️❤️

🪱 FAQ: Do worms try to escape the bin?
That’s one of the most common questions I get—and the good news is: not if they’re happy!

Red wigglers are like homebodies. If your worm bin has:
✅ Fresh food scraps (not too much!)
✅ Moist but not soggy bedding
✅ Air holes for oxygen
✅ A cozy, dark environment

…then your worms are content and will stay put. When conditions are wrong (too wet, too dry, too acidic, too hot), they might try to make a run for it.

💡 Pro tip: Keep the bin in a cool, shady spot, and avoid overfeeding. Happy worms = stay-at-home worms!

🥚 Why Add Eggshells to Your Worm Bin? 🐛
Crushed eggshells are a fantastic natural mineral boost for your composting worms. They're packed with calcium carbonate, which helps balance pH and supports worm health—especially when breeding.

Over time, eggshells also improve the structure of the compost (a.k.a. worm castings), making it lighter and more aerated—great for your garden!

But here’s the key:
👉 Crush them as fine as you can—almost to powder if possible. The smaller the pieces, the faster they break down and the more useful they are.
👉 Limit it to once every 1–2 weeks. Worms don’t need much, and too many shells can throw off the bin’s balance.

It’s a small habit with a big benefit—so next time you crack an egg, save the shell and give your worms a little treat! 🌱💪

Did you know? These little wigglers LOVE their coffee as much as you do! ☕🐛
Used coffee grounds = worm breakfast. Packed with nitrogen, it's a great treat (in moderation) that helps turn yesterday’s brew into tomorrow’s black gold. Compost magic! 🌱✨
