🧊 Some absolutely MONSTER hail fell across Illinois yesterday.

The largest stone reported was an incredible 6 inches in diameter near Kankakee, Illinois — a size that would easily surpass the current Illinois state hail record of 4.75 inches, which fell in Minooka on June 10, 2015.

And here’s a wild coincidence…

According to the NCEI hail database going back to 1950, the largest hailstone ever noted in Illinois was also 6 inches, reported in Kankakee County on April 23, 1961.

However, that 1961 report was listed as unofficial, meaning the 4.75-inch Minooka hailstone from 2015 remains the official state record.

What makes yesterday even more remarkable is that the National Weather Service in Chicago received six separate reports of hail larger than that current record size.

Yesterday will likely be remembered as one of the most significant hail events Illinois has seen in modern history.
