What to do in a winter storm warning!
As winter weather approaches, we wanted to outline a few things for you in the event of a power outage, and routine maintenance to keep your pool running properly.
1.) Water Level. With the freezing temperatures, freeze protection will cause your pool to likely run 24/7. Maintaining a proper water level is key to ensure that all pipes continue to run water through them to prevent freeze. Please insure your water level is 1/2 up the tile line. Evaporation may be high, so keeping an eye on this essential. If you can safely fill your pool, please do so. Reminder, when done filling your pool, undo the hose so that it doesn’t freeze and cover your spigot. Set a timer to ensure you do not over fill your pool causing your deck to freeze solid. If the water level drops below your skimmer mouth, it can cause the equipment to run dry and freeze.
2.) If your pool equipment does not have freeze protection, please set your schedules to run 24/7 so that we don’t risk freeze. If you don’t know if you have freeze protection, plan on running your pool 24/7 until at least Tuesday.
3.) Placing a 1/2 empty water bottle or tennis ball in your skimmer baskets, and 3-4 bottles / balls in the pool will help break up ice / give ice an “expansion” joint in the event the pool starts to ice over.
4.) In the event of a power lose, please follow the procedures listed below:
- If power is lost, see if you can safely make your way to the pool equipment.
- Most equipment sets have a main breaker, or a breaker panel by the pool equipment - turn off all breakers.
- Remove the drain plugs from the bottom of the pump, filter, heater, etc. - remove the lid from your pump and place the plugs in the basket so they’re not lost. Leave the lid off your pumps.
PLEASE NOTE IF YOUR EQUIPMENT IS BELOW THE POOL LEVEL, THIS STEP CAN NOT BE DONE AS IT WILL DRAIN THE ENTIRE POOL, VOID THIS STEP AND CONTINUE BELOW
- If possible, cover your equipment with a tarp.
- Call our office and leave a message, we will periodically turn the phone back on and call you back to ensure we have battery.
- Leave equipment off, we will visit your equipment once it is safe to do so to ensure things are not damaged and can be safely run. If the equipment is frozen and it tries to run, the ice can block water flow and possibly damage expensive components.
Please keep us informed and updated on the condition of your pool deck and if you lost power. We will try to get to your pool as quickly as possible, however pool decks typically stay iced over longer than normal roads. It is our priority to ensure our employees remain safe, and will get to you as soon as we can.
