Meet the person behind the tools! 🌿 I am Kevin Van Dongen, the owner and operator of Upstate Invasive Plant Control & Native Restoration LLC. I hold a Master’s degree in Education and am a former teacher, but my greatest classroom is the great outdoors. I started this business because I love our local environment. Invasive plants choke out native species and harm our local ecosystems. I want to help protect and restore our natural spaces, one yard at a time. When you hire us, you get expert care, education, and a deep respect for nature. Let’s work together to keep our local habitats healthy! Contact me today to book a consultation.

Reclaim your landscape the natural way! 🌿

Battling stubborn w**ds and invasive plants can feel like an endless cycle, but you don’t need harsh chemicals to regain control of your outdoor space. At Upstate Invasive Plant Control & Native Restoration, we focus on thorough, manual removal and ongoing maintenance paired with eco-friendly, “lasagna style” smothering techniques.

How we do it:
After we carefully remove the w**ds, certain invasives, or poison ivy, we apply a layered approach using green materials, cardboard, and organic mulch. This powerful method blocks sunlight, effectively starving remaining w**ds at the source and preventing them from returning.

Building a better foundation:
This isn’t just w**d control—it’s soil building. By simultaneously removing unwanted plants or certain invasives and installing our lasagna-style layers, we are creating brand-new garden beds from scratch. As the materials break down over time, they enrich your soil with vital organic matter. This creates a nutrient-dense, w**d-free canvas, perfectly prepped for installing the native plants you’ve been dreaming of right within the smothered areas.

Get ready for the season! 🍂
It’s a fantastic time of year to clean up your existing beds, break ground on new ones, and prepare your soil for successful fall plantings. Let us help you transform your property responsibly and restore ecological balance to your landscape.

It’s incredible what simple mechanical removal of dense invasive stands—such as this Common Buckthorn and Honeysuckle—can do for a landscape. 🌿

By clearing out these aggressive invasives, we’re not just cleaning up a space; we’re giving our local ecosystem room to breathe and recover. With ongoing management and some help from native replanting, those beneficial native plants waiting in the soil, along with the new ones we’ve introduced, now have a chance to thrive without being outcompeted.

The result? A much healthier, diverse ecosystem that’s actually meant to be here in just two years. It’s a win for the land, a win for local wildlife such as birds and pollinators, and a beautiful, vibrant step toward restoring the natural balance of our local ecosystems. 🌱🌻

Invasive plants, including invasive honeysuckles and Japanese knotw**d, removed and smothered along a stream bank. (Swipe to see progression)

Following manual removal of these invasive plants, we heavily smothered these sloped areas with cardboard, jute mesh, and mulch.

This combination allows us to smother the areas where we removed the invasive plants, hold up and anchor the mulch and cardboard on the steep slopes, prevent erosion, and enrich the soil over time .

After a smothering and maintenance period, beneficial native plants can be installed.
