So your basement flooded due to the recent storm and you don't know what to do. Your electric panel was submerged in water, mud and who knows what else. Here's our recommendations-
1- safety first. DON'T t stand in water. Water conducts electricity. YOU CAN DIE.
2- If you hear buzzing , humming or smell something burning or acrid. LEAVE IMMEDIATELY and call the Fire Department. They can contact the electric utility todisconnect yoir power.
3-Call an electrician to inspectthe damaged equipment.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY- We are currently looking to expand our staff to keep keep up with the work we have in progress and and have booked. We are looking for third or fourth year Apprentices or Journeyman/(person?) level electricians. However, we will consider first or second year apprentices. "Apprentice" and "Journeyman" means you are registered as such with the VT Department of Labor.

CAREER OPPORTUNITY- The Covid pandemic has caused may people to re-assess their employment options. If this is you, consider this an invitation to discuss a change. Prior trade experience is a plus, but if you have drive and are willing to learn a trade that is in demand and cannot be sent overseas you might be the right person.

Contact me directly at: [email protected] for more detailed information and job requirements.

Keep in mind for any project you are considering (not just electrical) that lead times are now lengthy and no relief is in sight. What used to take days for our material orders to be fulfilled is now taking 6-8 weeks.

With a hurricane or tropical storm headed to New England, here's some electrical safety reminders.
1- Never go near a downed electrical wire on your property or in the roadway. This can be FATAL. Notify your local emergency services or utility company.
2- If the power goes out and you're going to run a generator, NEVER put it inside your house or attached garage. Gas and diesel engines create carbon monoxide while runnig which is odorless and lethal. Never refuel a running or hot generator.
3-Unless properly installed by a licensed electrician, never attempt to connect your generator to the building electrical panel. Failure to do so can lead to equipment damage, fire or potential hazards to utility line workers trying to restore power.
4- If your basement is possibly going to flood, turn off power to any receptacles except the sump pump. Do not go into a flooded basement if the power is on. If your electric panel is in the basement and becomes submerged, it needs to be inspected by a licensed electrician before it is re-energized. Submerged appliances should be discarded, most today have electronics that are not repairable.

A customer asked me if we do home automation. We do not. There are simply too many different systems out there, all with different operating systems. Some are proprietary, some are open source. The hard part is not the installation, it's the system integration- getting all the parts to talk to each other and work seamlessly, every time.

It's HOT out there! Keep a few electrical safety tips in mind:
1- NEVER use a light duty extension cord to run a window air conditioner. Only #12 gauge, and only if it's absolutely necessary. Keep it as short as possible, 6ft max.
2- DO NOT run extension cords under carpet, it traps the heat created by the load.
3- NEVER EVER plug a window air conditioner into a"plug strip" or "surge arrestor strip". Most are cheaply made offshore and are not designed for the heavy load of compressors starting up.
4- Make sure the electrical accessories you buy are "listed". That means they were tested for safety. The only reputable test agencies are UL, ETL and TUV. CE and CCC are not testers. And yes, sometimes the listing tag is a counterfeit, so shop from a reputable retailer , not some online outfit like (well you know who)
