🔥 Fire damage at a receptacle supplied by aluminum branch-circuit wiring—a reminder that proper connections matter.

2023 NEC 406.3(D) requires 15- and 20-amp receptacles directly connected to aluminum conductors to have terminals marked CO/ALR. Connections must also meet NEC 110.14 requirements.

Aluminum wiring alone does not establish the fire’s cause. Device compatibility, connection quality, and proper installation must be evaluated.

⚠️ Keep the damaged circuit off until a qualified electrician evaluates and repairs it.

⚡ STOP SHARING THE MAST!

2023 NEC 230.28 — Service Masts as Supports

Only power service-drop or overhead service conductors are permitted to be attached to a service mast.

That means cable TV, telephone, fiber, broadband, and other communication lines should not use the electrical service mast as their attachment point. These utilities need their own properly installed support.

👀 Look up at the service mast on your next job. You might be surprised how many utilities are sharing it!

2023 NEC 110.26 — Spaces About Electrical Equipment

Required working space and access around electrical equipment must be provided and maintained to allow for safe operation and maintenance.

Ground rod sticking up a little too high… 🤔⚡

Is the rod too long, or did it hit the footer? 😂

Either way, the grounding electrode still needs to meet the installation requirements of 2023 NEC 250.53(G) — rod and pipe electrodes generally need at least 8 ft of length in contact with the soil.

⚡ How would you support this wiring?

The electrical cable supplying this gas furnace is improperly supported. The 2023 NEC requires NM cable to be properly secured and supported under Section 334.30.

How low is TOO LOW for an electrical meter?

The 2023 NEC does not specify a minimum mounting height for an electric meter. Meter height is generally determined by the electric utility’s service requirements.

Many utilities require the CENTER of the meter to be between 3½ and 5½ feet above finished grade.

Always check your local utility’s requirements before installing a meter socket!

🌽⚡ Is this dangerous, or is it being overthought?

This barn is open to the public and filled with corn for kids to play in. As they play, dust becomes airborne, and there’s a standard electrical panel and electrical equipment right in the area.

The 2023 NEC recognizes grain dust as a combustible dust (Class II, Group G), but that doesn’t automatically make the entire area a hazardous location.

With this much corn and airborne dust around electrical equipment, should this area be evaluated for explosion hazards?
Is this a legitimate safety concern, or is it being overthought? What are your thoughts?

⚡ Can you run an electric stove cord through the floor and plug it into a receptacle in the basement?

No. The 2023 NEC 400.12(2) prohibits flexible cords, cord sets, and power-supply cords from being run through holes in walls, ceilings, or floors.

The permanent branch-circuit wiring should be brought to a properly located receptacle so the range cord does not pass through the structure.

Just because it reaches the receptacle doesn’t mean it’s Code compliant. ⚡

⚡ Protect the Wire — Nail Plates Matter

When electrical cables pass through bored holes in wood framing, they need protection from nails and screws that could damage the conductors after the walls are finished.

Under 2023 NEC 300.4(A)(1), the edge of the hole must be at least 1¼ inches from the nearest edge of the wood member.

If that 1¼-inch clearance cannot be maintained, the cable must be protected by a steel plate or bushing at least 1/16 inch thick and of appropriate length and width to cover the area of the wiring.

In this video, the required protection is missing.

It may seem like a small item during a rough inspection, but once drywall is installed, a nail or screw could pe*****te the cable and create an electrical hazard.

Protect the wire before you cover the wall.
