How can communities expand housing opportunities? 🏡

Join Senior Planner Matthew G. Rogers and Planner Mirren Galway at the Capital District Regional Planning Commission’s Annual Planning and Zoning Workshop in Troy, NY, for their presentation “Unlocking Housing Choices.”

Matthew and Mirren will explore a range of regulatory reforms communities can consider, from minor targeted updates and “gentle density measures” to larger-scale overhauls, commercial corridor retrofits, and mixed-use revitalization.

Modernizing collegiate athletic facilities doesn’t have to mean putting the season on hold.

In a recent article published by University Business, LaBella’s Higher Education Studio Manager Jerry DeRomanis, AIA, and Project Manager Jessica Kruse, AIA, explain how thoughtful planning and phased construction can help colleges and universities improve athletic facilities while maintaining campus operations.

Drawing on Rochester Institute of Technology’s Judson Stadium project, completed in 2026, they share how a multiphase approach transformed RIT’s athletic campus while keeping athletic seasons alive.

💡 Their recommendations:

• Plan beyond individual facilities. Consider the entire campus’s long-term needs.
• Make every phase count. Design improvements to support future projects and minimize rework.
• Prioritize uninterrupted operations. Plan around athletic seasons, campus events, and temporary facility needs.

We’re pleased to share that Senior Environmental Engineer Jared Pristach, PE, WEDG, will be a featured speaker at the October Chapter Meeting of the Genesee Finger Lakes Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association taking place next week in Rochester, NY.

Jared’s presentation, “Climate Adaptation in the Finger Lakes,” will examine how aging infrastructure and a changing climate affect the way communities respond to flooding, extreme heat, changing precipitation patterns, and other climate hazards.

Friday night lights made history in Lackawanna! 🏈

On October 9, the Lackawanna City School District (LCSD) cut the ribbon on its new high school athletic fields before the Steelers made history by playing their first home game under the lights on school grounds. Students, families, staff, alumni, and neighbors came together for a Homecoming celebration they’ll remember for years to come.

The athletic complex is the first project completed under LCSD’s $81.2 million districtwide capital improvement program. LaBella is proud to serve as the full-service design team and help create a place for student athletics and community gatherings.

Congratulations to LCSD and everyone who helped bring this exciting milestone to life!
