Cold Hardy Bamboo

Cold Hardy Bamboo We specialize in contract growing cold hardy bamboo for USDA zone 5 & south for home gardeners, landscapers, zoological institutes, city parks & others.

Our Japanese inspired bamboo garden, Megumi no Sono, is located in northern Indiana approximately 60 miles south of the Michigan state line. We grow and test the cold hardiness of 25 species and varieties of bamboo in the midwest. After many years of cold hardy testing we are pleased to make our bamboo plants available to home gardeners, landscapers, zoological institutes, city parks, landscape ar

chitects, and more. Home gardeners and landscape industry professionals alike choose us for our years of experience and for our larger plants at a lower cost.

• We specialize in larger field dug divisions.

• Live plants are available for pickup at our nursery location only.

• All orders are field dug by request and are ready for pickup one to two months after being dug, weather and crop production permitting. We do not carry a potted inventory. Presale consultation on species choice per your application, planting site and more is offered. Please note that we do not carry an inventory. Every order is custom grown to meet your individual needs. Each plant is then stabilized for at least one month before being made available for pickup. We do not propagate from small root cuttings. We dig large plants with minimal root disturbance.

I wanted to post an update and say that I promise that I haven't forgotten digging season.

It's supposed to be digging season right now, but we are currently in a state of severe drought. It's been this way for a few months now. We had excessive rain back in July. You'd never know it now though.

We did receive a small amount of rain overnight last night. I dug a test hole again today to check for soil moisture. It's slightly damp less than 3" deep. Beyond that depth and the soil is completely dry.

People have actually asked me before why I don't just water the groves so divisions can be taken. First, I don't have enough garden hoses to reach that far. Secondly, if I did, I doubt the well could push the water that many acres back. Thirdly, if I could get water back there, the groves need more water than my well pump could pump before burning up. That is absolutely not a viable option. What we need is rain. Unfortunately, I don't control the rain.

I have been growing bamboo since 1997 and this is by far the driest for the longest duration I have seen the ground since that time. The groves are doing okay. The leaves were cupped a week or so ago. No full on curling. They are looking better this week.

I'm sorry for the wait, but please bear with us as we too eagerly await any rain that might come our way. I will post here on our page as well as on our website when we are finally able to produce divisions. Thank you for your patience.

I'm ready for summer to be over. My outdoor work has been at a bare minimum over the past 1 - 2 months due to the extreme heat and humidity. It's finally starting to look like this miserable weather could be coming to an end and I'm looking forward to fall!

Digging season will be coming up in a couple of months.
In the meantime, we do have some pre-dug plants available for pickup just in time for this cool down in the weather to make it fit for working outdoors.

This is apparently what a phishing scam looks like. Please don't fall for this like I did. If you do, do what I did and change all of your passwords immediately!

I was limited as to what I could see and do on my phone screen. Once I was on my desktop I could see what was going on.
