Here’s what NOT to do when installing a gas insert into a masonry fireplace….

What you see here is a gas insert installed into a masonry fireplace that’s coated with stage 3 creosote which is HIGHLY flammable. This is the type of creosote that needs a chemical treatment to remove. It’s a sticky tar substance caused by burning wet wood or improper draft.

Whoever installed this unit stuffed the smoke shelf and all around the insert to try and mask the smell of flammable soot. Insulation around the box is prohibited for any fireplace unit as it can cause the box to over heat.

They also ran the gas line directly towards the flue liner. Thank god my client called me to inspect because this is by far the most dangerous thing I’ve ever come across in my 8 years of servicing chimneys.

Always ask for pictures folks! It’s your house and you deserve to know what you are paying for.
